{"id":41917,"date":"2020-09-10T00:17:40","date_gmt":"2020-09-09T14:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=41917"},"modified":"2020-09-11T09:48:29","modified_gmt":"2020-09-10T23:48:29","slug":"off-the-map-hospitality-operators-disappointed-by-states-roadmap-to-coronavirus-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/off-the-map-hospitality-operators-disappointed-by-states-roadmap-to-coronavirus-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"Off the map: Hospitality operators disappointed by state\u2019s roadmap to coronavirus recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE state government\u2019s roadmap for easing coronavirus restrictions in the Surf Coast has received a mixed reception, with some hospitality operators left disappointed by its cautious approach.<br \/>\nRevealed by Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vic.gov.au\/coronavirus-covid-19-restrictions-roadmaps\">roadmap<\/a> lays out a five-step approach (with the first step only applying to metropolitan Melbourne, which has an entirely separate roadmap).<br \/>\nHospitality operators will have to remain under the existing Stage 3 restrictions of only take-away and delivery until step three of the roadmap, which will allow mostly outdoor service, a group limit of 10 and density limits.<br \/>\nHowever, step three will not come into effect until regional Victoria has a two-week average of less than five new coronavirus cases a day and no cases with an unknown source over the previous two weeks.<br \/>\nGrowlers owner Peter Hansen hoped his Torquay restaurant would be returned to the density restrictions and social distancing of the first lockdown.<br \/>\n\u201cWe were actually looking forward to the announcement, we thought there may be an easing of restrictions in the regional centres \u2013 we don\u2019t have the cases the metropolitan area have \u2013 but that\u2019s not the case, so we just plod on the way we are,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen we did reopen, hospitality was probably more regulated and had more controls than any other industry.<br \/>\n\u201cSo it\u2019s disappointing, to say the least.\u201d<br \/>\nHe said the continuing restrictions were working against the spirit of the federal government\u2019s extended JobKeeper program, as pubs and restaurants could not yet employ extra staff.<br \/>\nJoel Taylor of the Taylor Group, which operates the Torquay Hotel and Grovedale Hotel, said the roadmap was \u201ca whole bunch of news that really meant nothing for our industry\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re dependent on the case numbers, which I just think is unnecessary.<br \/>\n\u201cThe hotel industry has proven we can provide safe COVID-19 environments \u2013 especially regionally, we\u2019ve had to prove we could do it and we did \u2013 but that has been disregarded by the government and we feel we\u2019ve been pushed aside once again.\u201d<br \/>\nHe said the requirement of no new cases for 28 days needed to reach the fifth step of COVID Normal (which will have no restrictions for hospitality other than record-keeping of patrons) \u201cmight be one of the most difficult things to do with this virus\u201d.<br \/>\nG21 chief executive officer Elaine Carbines said the Geelong region had to stay the course.<br \/>\n\u201cI think a lot of people in our region hoped there might be a little bit more in it, but you have to be compelled by the advice and the scientific evidence and the modelling.<br \/>\n\u201cI think the end\u2019s in sight, and for me, the goal now is summer and Christmas.\u201d<br \/>\nFor the latest updates, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/dhhs.vic.gov.au\/coronavirus\">dhhs.vic.gov.au\/coronavirus<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE state government\u2019s roadmap for easing coronavirus restrictions in the Surf Coast has received a mixed reception, with some hospitality operators left disappointed by its cautious approach.
