NOMINATIONS to stand in the council elections at the Surf Coast Shire open this time next week, and more candidates continue to throw their hats in the ring.
\nIncumbent mayor and Torquay Ward councillor Rose Hodge is seeking re-election. She describes herself as \u201ccommitted to the Torquay community, reliable, experienced, hard-working, 16 years as a councillor and five-term mayor, and a strong local advocate\u201d.
\nFellow Torquay Ward councillors Martin Duke and David Bell will also stand again.
\nThe Greens have endorsed Jan Juc resident Kate Gazzard to stand in Torquay Ward.
\n\u201cMy vision is that by advocating for preventative healthcare, social justice and environmental protection, we can support our community and provide a safe future for our children,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kate Gazzard will stand for the Greens in Torquay Ward.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Amber Potter will also stand in Torquay, and said her passion for many things led her to declare her candidacy.
\n\u201cI am extremely passionate about families, kids and young adults, especially their access to local facilities that enhance their wellbeing.\u201d
\nIncumbent councillor Tony Revell will seek re-election in Anglesea Ward, and Mike Bodsworth, Raylene Fordham and Libby Stapleton will also stand for the seat.
\nMs Fordham said she would bring extensive local connections with both groups and individuals to the council.
\n\u201cI will continue to deliver strong leadership that respects the diverse views of permanent and non-permanent residents, consistent with my track record of engaging, listening and acting.\u201d
\nMs Stapleton said she cared about people, the environment, and building resilient and vibrant communities.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve worked for local businesses in Anglesea and Aireys Inlet. I understand that tourism is a significant part of our economy, but we need to ensure it\u2019s responsible tourism and that we\u2019re not destroying the very thing that attracts people here in the first place.\u201d
\nWinchelsea Ward councillor Heather Wellington has also declared her candidacy.
\n\u201cWe need councillors who are bold, questioning, committed to transparency and accountability, work hard, have commercial acumen and are passionate about the community,\u201d Ms Wellington said. \u201cIf we had a majority of such people in every council, we could change things for the better.\u201d
\nNominations open on September 17 and close at noon on September 22.
