	{"id":42297,"date":"2020-09-17T00:58:44","date_gmt":"2020-09-16T14:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=42297"},"modified":"2020-09-25T09:13:17","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T23:13:17","slug":"council-nominations-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/council-nominations-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Candidates declare themselves as council nominations open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE candidates for the next Surf Coast Shire council are stepping forward ahead of nominations for the election opening today (Thursday, September 17).<br \/>\nGary Allen has declared he will stand in Lorne Ward.<br \/>\nBorn and raised in Lorne after World War II, Mr Allen was later appointed principal of Lorne P-12 College.<br \/>\n\u201cAfter retiring from teaching I gained valuable advocacy experience as chair of the Country Education Project Victoria and as executive officer of the Rural Education Forum Australia,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cBoth organisations facilitated networking in rural and remote communities and lobbied both state and commonwealth governments to achieve improved educational outcomes for rural families and students.\u201d<br \/>\nHe returned to Lorne to live eight years ago and has been an active participant in the community since then.<br \/>\nIn Winchelsea Ward, Tony Phelps and Adrian Schonfelder have thrown their hats in the ring to contest the two seats held by incumbent councillors Heather Wellington and James McIntyre.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42308\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42308\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-42308\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/Untitled-design-3-1-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/Untitled-design-3-1-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/Untitled-design-3-1-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/Untitled-design-3-1-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/09\/Untitled-design-3-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tony Phelps will stand in Winchelsea Ward.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Phelps said if he was elected, he would work towards \u201cputting in place a strong direction, sensible policies, and a cohesive plan that is as fair as possible\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Surf Coast Shire is an odd mix of coastal and hinterland communities with sometimes conflicting needs and priorities. I certainly intend to work with the other eight councillors to achieve outcomes that are the best they can be for all involved. I believe in transparency, co-operation, collaboration, and teamwork.\u201d<br \/>\nMr Schonfelder said he was standing for election because \u201cour area needs consistent, strong and positive leadership\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cAs a life-long and sixth generation local, who lives and works locally, I know the issues that confront us every day. I\u2019m passionate about community and the environment, and supporting and nurturing community life.
