THE Impossible is set to return for its sixth year, with kayakers, canoers, and paddleboarders to test their skills as they race from Torquay to Barwon Heads via Point Impossible.<\/p>\n

Race organiser Pete Currie said after the uncertainty that had surrounded the race due to COVID-19 he was delighted to have it go ahead.<\/p>\n

“We did have a few anxious moments and a lot of negotiating with the authority but it’s ‘all go’, and it’s terrific that Melbourne’s opening up,” Currie said.<\/p>\n

“Entry numbers are looking quite good now. We would love to get 100 paddlers.”<\/p>\n

The Impossible includes several categories, including Ski\/Kayak, Prone Board, Outrigger Canoe, and Stand Up Paddleboarding.<\/p>\n

In past iterations, entrants have ranged from local enthusiasts to former Olympians.<\/p>\n

This year’s event will be slightly different due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Currie said while he was glad they could welcome Melburnians, the race often attracted competitors from even further afield.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had paddlers from interstate and also New Zealand and Hawaii, but not this year.”<\/p>\n

Currie said various protocols would be implemented to minimise the risk of transmission.<\/p>\n

“We’ve done a whole COVID-safe plan. It’s even down to 10 in each start, so we’re going to have multiple starts. People will also only be allowed down in the start area part of the beach when it’s time for their start.<\/p>\n

“Naturally, when we paddle, we are always more than 1.5 metres away from each other.”<\/p>\n
