{"id":44990,"date":"2020-11-12T00:18:37","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T14:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=44990"},"modified":"2020-11-12T07:55:03","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T21:55:03","slug":"new-surf-coast-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/new-surf-coast-council\/","title":{"rendered":"New Surf Coast Shire council comes together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE winds of change have swept through the Surf Coast Shire council, with new faces winning seven of the nine seats in this year\u2019s council election.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) officially calculated the vote for the Anglesea, Torquay and Winchelsea wards at the VEC electoral office in Torquay on Thursday last week.<\/p>\n<p>Rose Hodge and Heather Wellington are the only incumbent councillors to hold their seats.<\/p>\n<p>In election order, the new Surf Coast Shire council for the next four years is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lorne Ward: Gary Allen (who was the only candidate and won the election uncontested)<\/li>\n<li>Anglesea Ward: Libby Stapleton, Mike Bodsworth<\/li>\n<li>Torquay Ward: Kate Gazzard, Liz Pattison, Rose Hodge, Paul Barker<\/li>\n<li>Winchelsea Ward: Heather Wellington, Adrian Schonfelder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The shire will hold a special council meeting on Wednesday, November 18 at 6pm, virtually via Zoom, to elect a mayor and deputy mayor and determine the term of their respective offices.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What are your top priorities as a Surf Coast Shire councillor for your ward?\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cgoirh1BQY4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Cr Wellington publicly declared her intentions to run for mayor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have called for change at the shire for the past few years, but unfortunately my calls largely were met with inaction and resistance from within the council,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am the only councillor re-elected with a quota. I increased my vote for the second successive election, demonstrating wide support for my agenda for major cultural change at the shire. There is a strong message in this vote that the community wants change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have been urged by many people to stand for the position of mayor and, while it has never been my specific ambition, I have decided that it\u2019s the right time to throw my hat in the ring.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a unique opportunity, with a predominantly new team of councillors and the impending recruitment of a new CEO at Surf Coast Shire, to establish a new organisational culture and direction.
