THE Surfcoast Basketball Association is putting the call out to all interested junior players hoping to represent the Surfcoast Chargers ahead of the Victorian Junior Basketball League season.<\/p>\n

Try-out dates will be confirmed as further advice is handed down from Basketball Victoria as Government restrictions ease.<\/p>\n

Surfcoast Chargers representative squad and committee member Adam Forde said the representative side was a great opportunity to take a young player’s basketball to the next level.<\/p>\n

He said the standard of basketball was fantastic and while it was a competitive league, development of their squad members was extremely important.<\/p>\n

“It just gives them a chance to go to the next level,” Forde said.<\/p>\n

“It gives them a bit of a pathway to the senior level and improve their game.<\/p>\n

“It’s not about winning, it’s also about developing our kids.”<\/p>\n

One of the most exciting prospects for the Chargers is the fact they will be playing their home games in the new stadium in North Torquay.<\/p>\n

The $13.5 million build is the Surf Coast Shire council’s largest infrastructure project and Forde said he could not wait to see the Surfcoast players run out onto such a facility.<\/p>\n

“That’s the most exciting thing. The season kicks off in February, so we’re hoping the stadium will be open and we’ll be playing our home games in there.”<\/p>\n

The project will see three multi-use courts added next to the existing single-court stadium at Surf Coast Secondary College while there will also be a caf\u00e9, meeting rooms, change facilities, all abilities design features and additional car parking.<\/p>\n

There is plenty of opportunity for young basketball hopefuls, Forde said there was no limit on how many teams the Chargers could submit across the under-12 to under-21 level.<\/p>\n
