THE Surf Coast Shire has announced the inaugural recipients of its Local Legends Awards, recognising people and groups who have helped the community and environment thrive.
\nKeith Grossman was among the recipients, recognising his substantial impact on the Surf Coast.
\nA fourth-generation Surf Coast resident, Mr Grossman spent a decade on the shire”s council, including a stint as mayor in 2004\/2005. At various times he was also president of Torquay Football Club, Torquay Cricket Club, Surf Coast Tennis Club, The Surf Coast Community and Ratepayers Association, and chairman of the Bellbrae Cemetery Trust
\nMr Grossman said receiving the award was
\n“a surprise”.
\n“I suppose if you’re always around doing something in the community, in time people think you’re a bit of a legend because you’re always around, always talking.
\n“I’ve always got time to talk to someone because everyone’s got a story.”
\nDean Webster served on the council with Mr Grossman and praised his unceasing commitment to helping the community.
\n“He was always available to the community. If anyone had a problem, they would go Keith, and with his vast knowledge of the area he was able to get things fixed.
\n“He ensured ratepayers got value for their dollar, particularly with roads and infrastructure.”
\nJohn McDonald was another recipient of
\nthe award.
\nLike Mr Grossman, Mr McDonald has served the community in many capacities. He initiated the Surf Coast University of the Third Age (U3A) branch, is presently chair of the Torquay Lions Village, and has also helped support Torquay Food Aid.
\nTorquay Lions Village resident and former Torquay Lions president Billy Ryan said Mr McDonald was always willing to offer his support.
\n“He does lots of work in different groups. He is just a very involved person and is someone you go to if you need help.”
\nThe other inaugural recipients of the Local Legends awards were Murray Heard for his contribution to men’s health in the community, and Keshava Jenkins and Surf Coast Environmental Action Team for their contribution to the local environment.
