\nCommittee members launched the Anglesea and District War Memorial Appeal a year ago to provide a place for people returning from conflict, loved ones and descendants a place to reflect.
\nThe Anglesea and District War Memorial will be located in Cameron Park, Anglesea and will be made of Aireys Inlet sandstone inset with name panels and artwork.
\nThe surrounding garden includes comfortable seating, three flagpoles to display the Australian, New Zealand and Aboriginal flags, and lighting.
\nThe memorial will include the names of men and women from the area who served their country in a conflict.
\nCommittee member and Anglesea and District Historical Society Keith Hornibrook said the committee had complied 370 names from records but encouraged people to nominate those who served by November 30 to avoid disappointment.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s exciting and a relief all in one,\u201d Mr Hornibrook said of approaching the final stages of the campaign.
\n\u201cWe are starting to get to a stage where we can see something for what we have done.
\n\u201cThe memorial is not only a memorial for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, but to everyone\u2026 anyone who served in conflict and peacekeeping.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a place where you can remember your ancestors and what they went through, a place to show respect.\u201d
\nAnglesea is one of relatively few towns in Australia which does not have a permanent War Memorial to honour those who served their country
\nThe committee has raised more than $60,000 through a community appeal, with a target of $65,000. The project is supported by the Surf Coast Shire Council with in-kind contributions for project management.
