RUNNERS are set to get their first taste of competing post-COVID this weekend with the return of the Surf Coast Century.<\/p>\n

Eager competitors of the 100km and 50km ultra trail marathon will hit the ground running following confirmation from State Government that the event will go ahead.<\/p>\n

The “bucket-list” run will take participants on a challenging, but scenic journey scheduled across Anglesea, Torquay and Moggs Creek before returning to the starting line.<\/p>\n

Local event organiser Rapid Ascent are excitedly pushing ahead with this years’ COVID safe run after facing a three-month delay.<\/p>\n

Despite already being in its ninth year, Event Directors Sam Maffett and John Jacoby say this will be the most memorable race to-date.<\/p>\n

“We are stoked to see our event go ahead and to see competitors dreams, training and sacrifices be rewarded,” Mr Maffett said.<\/p>\n

“In many ways the year 2020 has been a bit like an ultra-marathon \u2013 we have had to overcome challenge after challenge without giving up.”<\/p>\n

The Surf Coast Century has become one of the only ultra-marathons to take place across the nation this year and is now accessible to inter-state competitors.<\/p>\n

The field limit will allow 200 solo runners in each race and 120 teams for relays made up of two to four people.<\/p>\n

With the easing of restrictions bigger crowds will be welcomed to attend this weekend however community safety remains a priority.<\/p>\n

Competitors will now be allowed a support person each and the chance to celebrate at the finishing line provided that general COVID-safety rules are adhered to.<\/p>\n

“We stayed positive that the Century would go ahead this year, and we believe our determination and willingness to adapt to the ever changing COVID situation has put us in a position where we can deliver the event at short notice,” Mr Jacoby said.<\/p>\n

After months of planning and re-planning the world-class event, Mr Maffett is grateful that competitors will be able to achieve their goals amongst an otherwise chaotic year.<\/p>\n

“Things haven’t always gone our way, but we have kept our eye on the goal and never given up hope that we can still make it to the end, one step at a time,” Mr Maffett said.<\/p>\n
