RESTAURANTS and cafes across the Surf Coast region have opted for outdoor dining permits ahead of the busy summer season.<\/p>\n

With holidays fast approaching, Surf Coast businesses have begun capitalising on the state government’s outdoor dining program.<\/p>\n

In mid-September, the government announced an easing of restrictions in outdoor settings along with an initiative to increase the number of patrons in restaurants.<\/p>\n

Under the Surf Coast Shire’s Fresh Air Dining program, the temporary permits will be granted to allow trade in areas not normally available including footpaths, carparks and public land.<\/p>\n

Proposals may also include marquees, lighting or other street furniture to create an inviting ambience for customers.<\/p>\n

The shire’s general manager of planning and environment Ransce Salan said since there had been a steady number of businesses across the region applying for permits since the announcement.<\/p>\n

“We received our first enquiry the day after the announcement by Premier Daniel Andrews.<\/p>\n

“So far we have issued 33 outdoor dining permits, and a further 11 are currently being considered.”<\/p>\n

The initiative of free outdoor permits gives some of the businesses worst hit by restrictions the chance to regain lost income.<\/p>\n

Businesses can apply to create or expand their outdoor dining options to accommodate for up to 70 customers, provided social distancing can still apply.<\/p>\n

The Surf Coast Shire has established a cross-department team called the Alfresco Concierge, which allows for more rapid assessments of each application.<\/p>\n

“We are doing everything we can to make widespread outdoor dining a reality on the Surf Coast this summer,” Mr Salan said.<\/p>\n

The concierge team is supporting business in the region by providing a single contact point that co-ordinates responses from up to six different council departments that have a role in assessing permits.<\/p>\n

At the moment, businesses applications are being assessed with 5-10 business days.<\/p>\n
