{"id":46851,"date":"2020-12-17T00:49:31","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T14:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=46851"},"modified":"2020-12-16T09:53:33","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T23:53:33","slug":"petition-clean-up-winchelsea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/petition-clean-up-winchelsea\/","title":{"rendered":"Petition urges shire to clean up its act in Winchelsea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 270 people have urged the Surf Coast Shire to improve the mowing and maintenance arrangements in Winchelsea, claiming the town&#8217;s presentation has been \u201cunsatisfactory and embarrassing\u201d for months.<\/p>\n<p>The petition, titled \u2018Keep Winchelsea tidy and smart\u2019, was submitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au\/Home\">Surf Coast Shire<\/a> in late November and was considered by the council at its December 8 meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The 276 signatories to the petition state they are \u201cvery unhappy with the presentation of our town\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that shire arrangements for mowing and gardening crews have recently changed and the difference is very noticeable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dedicated local employees who used to manage gardening and mowing took pride in their work and did a great job. Now we are part of a rotating crew arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor two to three months, the presentation of the town has been unsatisfactory and embarrassing to us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe grass in our public areas has reached 30cm high, people have been afraid to walk by the river for fear of snakes, numerous people have complained, finally a maintenance crew has blitzed the town, then the cycle starts again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not good enough. We should not have to complain before we get some action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The petitioners say Winchelsea needs to be presented well to encourage people to stop and support the town&#8217;s businesses and to \u201cprotect our reputation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The petition calls on the shire to do three things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reinstate the local gardening and mowing team<\/li>\n<li>Disclose what standards apply to the maintenance of Winchelsea&#8217;s lawns and gardens (including how frequently they are supposed to be attended to) and how their appearance is monitored; and<\/li>\n<li>Maintain the town at a good standard all the time \u201cso we don&#8217;t have to complain constantly\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The petition was referred to the shire&#8217;s general manager of culture and community Chris Pike, with a report to be presented at the council meeting on January 19, 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 270 people have urged the Surf Coast Shire to improve the mowing and maintenance arrangements in Winchelsea, claiming the town&#8217;s presentation has been \u201cunsatisfactory and embarrassing\u201d for months.
