THIS new year’s celebrations will not be the same as previous, but there are still options for those wishing to visit Geelong’s waterfront on the final day of 2020.<\/p>\n

In normal circumstances, New Year’s Eve would see the waterfront packed with people, with the highlight of the night being the fireworks, but unfortunately they will be unable to go ahead this year.<\/p>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen the cancellation of the fireworks given it is an event that sees a high number of people gather together.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, the City will launch a new sound and light show for the floating Christmas tree beginning on Boxing Day, running through until January 7. It can be viewed from 8.30pm to midnight. While Christmas projections on City Hall will run from 8.30pm-11.30pm.<\/p>\n

The City’s Acting Director Economy, Investment and Attraction Tim Ellis said while it was disappointing the usual celebrations could not take place, there was still plenty to do in Geelong.<\/p>\n

“We understand many people will be disappointed by this, but the cancellation of our New Year’s Eve fireworks is sadly unavoidable in order to ensure the safety of our community,” Mr Ellis said.<\/p>\n

“There are still many great ways to mark the occasion in smaller groups.<\/p>\n

“You can get together with family and friends at one of our hospitality venues or embrace the space with a picnic in a park.”<\/p>\n

The traditional free entertainment attracts between 20,000 and 50,000 visitors to the waterfront annually and is a highlight on Greater Geelong’s social calendar.<\/p>\n

The City urges community members to safely celebrate the festive season and to keep following the COVIDSafe measures in place.<\/p>\n
