{"id":47906,"date":"2021-01-14T00:19:15","date_gmt":"2021-01-13T14:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=47906"},"modified":"2021-01-13T10:32:47","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T00:32:47","slug":"vale-maggi-jean-lowdon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/vale-maggi-jean-lowdon\/","title":{"rendered":"Vale Maggi Jean Lowdon, 1944-2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAGGI\u00a0Jean was born and educated in Melbourne\u00a0and awarded a PhD in biochemistry\u00a0from Monash University.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was the first of her family to complete tertiary education and she spent many early holidays in Torquay with her parents Jean and Osborne Vary, and her siblings Don, Pamela and Ruth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggi\u00a0built a house on 10 acres in Jan Juc in the 1970s with her husband Brian Lowdon where she brought up Tabitha, Carlo and Pippi.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She later moved to Anglesea where she spent the remainder of her life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She had seven grandchildren who were given many crawling races and art lessons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggi\u00a0travelled extensively, both within Australia and overseas.\u00a0She was very curious to learn about new (particularly Indigenous) cultures, art, pottery, hand crafts, gorges, canyons, beaches, forests and flowers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggi\u00a0was a valued member of many communities throughout her life and in her final years in Anglesea she enjoyed coffee groups, book groups, scrabble groups, walking groups, fitness groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.angair.org.au\/\">Angair<\/a>, The Arthouse and Anglesea Community Garden.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many will remember her small gallery (Muddy\u2019s She Shed), made in one of the original Anglesea boathouses, where she displayed her pottery, printmaking and hand-made books during the Surf Coast Arts Trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggi\u00a0was a great friend to many &#8211; known for her thoughtful ability to listen and her quiet nature. She was a woman of depth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirty years ago,\u00a0Maggi\u00a0miraculously healed her body from a rare type of cancer using both chemotherapy, meditation and diet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She gave a keynote paper with her thoughts on the experience at a medical conference in Fiji and inspired many doctors to alter the way they communicated with their patients.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She went on to train with Ian Gawler in cancer support and also spent many years giving emotional and spiritual support to people who had cancer on behalf of the Cancer Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggi\u00a0loved the wave shapes in the mountains and the ocean, and both featured in her art.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was a gentle person, generous of spirit, who spent many years perfecting the qualities of acceptance, forgiveness and surrender.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was highly intelligent, deeply contemplative and an inspiring learner and teacher.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggi had wonderful fun and was a beautiful dancer, body boarder and snow skier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was appreciated for her wit, and her skill with words.\u00a0She spent much time camping, walking in natural places and was astounded at the beauty of nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggi, who passed on December 21, 2020,\u00a0will be lovingly remembered as a gardener, a reader, a potter and a scientist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has left the world a better place and those cherished parts of her character will live on in those she touched.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MAGGI\u00a0Jean was born and educated in Melbourne\u00a0and awarded a PhD in biochemistry\u00a0from Monash University.\u00a0\u00a0 She was the first of her family to complete tertiary education and she spent many early holidays in Torquay with her parents Jean and Osborne Vary, and her siblings Don, Pamela and Ruth.\u00a0\u00a0 Maggi\u00a0built a house on 10 acres in Jan [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-secondary understrap-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/vale-maggi-jean-lowdon\/\">Read More&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":142,"featured_media":47907,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"class_list":["post-47906","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
