THE stage is set for the ninth instalment of the Battle of the Bridge between Torquay and Jan Juc on January 24 at Spring Creek Reserve.<\/p>\n
Torquay has had a stranglehold over the trophy in recent time, but it is Jan Juc that currently holds the honours.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s winner will claim overall bragging rights with the current Battle of the Bridge ledger sitting at 4-4.<\/p>\n
Torquay Cricket Club president Rob Dunne said he was looking forward to the chance of redemption, but said there was a great deal of respect between the two clubs.<\/p>\n
While there are bragging rights on the line, the most important element of the day was the community involvement.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo be able to contest this game has always been fun \u2026 we\u2019re looking for redemption.\u201d Dunne said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt comes from a place of respect more than anything, it\u2019s something that\u2019s really been embraced by\u00a0the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, there\u2019s some rivalry but at the end of the day cricket is the winner and the community is the winner.<\/p>\n
\u201cCricket has an opportunity to be a good way for people in the community to recover from almost a\u00a0year in lockdown.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jan Juc Cricket Club president Rick Wheeler said it was a unique rivalry having two clubs in such close\u00a0proximity along the club, yet they play in different competitions.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re always going to get it (the rivalry) when you\u2019ve got two teams so close together,\u201d Wheeler said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s good for both clubs, it\u2019s good to showcase our local talent.\u201d<\/p>\n
The day will be kicked off by the Barwon Women\u2019s Cricket Competition fixture between Torquay and Collendina followed by a legends match at 1.30pm before the senior Battle of the Bridge takes place\u00a0at 5pm, both matches to be played in a twenty20 format.<\/p>\n
While for the juniors, there will be a Blasters hit-out in between the legends and senior match.<\/p>\n
All funds raised through raffles, donations and food and drink on the day will be donated to the\u00a0Cancer Council, as was the case last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
