	{"id":5048,"date":"2017-12-21T15:08:53","date_gmt":"2017-12-21T04:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=5048"},"modified":"2017-12-21T15:08:53","modified_gmt":"2017-12-21T04:08:53","slug":"taking-strides-regional-improvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/taking-strides-regional-improvement\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking strides in regional improvement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN EXTENSION of the Surf Coast Walk to Lorne to enable dual use by cyclists and walkers from start to finish is one of three applications by the Surf Coast Shire to the federal government\u2019s Building Better Regions Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The shire is seeking $100,000 for its Growing Adventure Tourism Surf Coast Trails, along with $360,500 for the Banyul-Warri Fields Yuurrock soccer pitch and lighting and $5 million for the Surf Coast Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium (as mentioned in last week\u2019s edition).<\/p>\n<p>Cr Margot Smith said she was particularly excited about the Surf Coast Trails project, to which the shire would contribute $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe $200,000 would enable the development of a plan to extend the Surf Coast Walk from Fairhaven to Cumberland River near Lorne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would also be able to develop a plan for cyclists and walkers to both use the entire trail, and review the current management model of the Surf Coast Walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s allocation of funds to the walk follows the success of the Point Impossible to Fairhaven section and its significance as a G21 priority project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Surf Coast Walk is a world-class attraction and a key part of the Victorian trail industry. Trails are one of the state\u2019s largest tourist attractors as more people are seeking outdoor adventures,\u201d Cr Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the G21 region to be Victoria\u2019s premier trail destination for walkers, runners, cyclists and mountain bikers of all abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Yuurrock soccer project at Banyul-Warri Fields includes the development of a third pitch, featuring a drainage system, lighting, natural turf coverage, and fully enclosed chain mesh fencing with high areas behind both goals. A third pitch in the precinct would also support growth in soccer for both males and females.<\/p>\n<p>The Surf Coast Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium is a key project in the shire\u2019s civic and community precinct masterplan, and will increase participation in physical activity by delivering an indoor court facility with space for group fitness and various sports including basketball, netball, volleyball, badminton and futsal.
