A LOCAL football netball club has created new grounds for inclusivity with the introduction of an all abilities netball team.<\/p>\n
The Surf Coast Suns is looking to field its first all abilities netball team this season with the reintroduction of a disability-friendly competition held at Kardinia Park.<\/p>\n
Vice-president Amber Potter said the club had always welcomed inclusivity and given kids a chance to play regardless of their skill and experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have had teenagers who hadn\u2019t played before and they come to our club because usually netball is ingrained, and it isn\u2019t something you pick up in your teens but because we are such a young club, we have been able to give people a chance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Discussions began last year between Potter, AFL Barwon and Leisure Networks after learning an abilities competition was again on the cards in Geelong.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was just a little thought I came up with and ran it past a local disability support group and she was on board,\u201d Potter said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI took it to our committee, and they were really keen to have the community involvement and giving all people an opportunity to play sport should they want to.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is about looking at how as a club and a community we can make sure anybody who want to be active or engaged in a team is able to.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the time of print, the Suns had a total of five interested participants with a need for up to four more players to field a side.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe age group is 15-plus and it is a mixed competition,\u201d Potter said.<\/p>\n
The season is set to begin at the end of this month, with a weekly Tuesday night game at 5.30pm.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am really excited about this,\u201d Potter said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTeam sport is a huge thing for community and friendship, and I believe the strong support that comes from belonging to a group is so good for mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Surf Coast Suns all abilities team is currently looking for a coach.<\/p>\n
