{"id":51567,"date":"2021-04-29T01:48:34","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T14:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=51567"},"modified":"2021-05-19T14:12:00","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T03:12:00","slug":"amelias-special-place-in-footy-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/amelias-special-place-in-footy-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Amelia&#8217;s special place in Footy Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SPORTS enthusiast Amelia Courtney has big dreams of one day playing in the AFLW.<\/p>\n<p>But the Sacred Heart College student never expected to see herself featured in a Footy Record while she was still only in Year 7.<\/p>\n<p>She got a big surprise this month when a story she wrote about her passion for playing the game was chosen to be featured in the 2021 AFWL Grand Final Edition of the magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Amelia wrote the descriptive piece as part of a school project with the topic of \u2018My Special Place\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Her English teacher (and Junior AFL Coach) Carl Tracey was so impressed with her writing that he sent her draft on to the AFL.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51574\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51574\" style=\"width: 185px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51574 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/ScreenShot2021-04_67045-1-185x300.png?_t=1619627497\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/ScreenShot2021-04_67045-1-185x300.png 185w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/ScreenShot2021-04_67045-1-633x1024.png 633w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/ScreenShot2021-04_67045-1-768x1243.png 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/ScreenShot2021-04_67045-1-949x1536.png 949w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/ScreenShot2021-04_67045-1.png 1006w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51574\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amelia&#8217;s article as it appeared in the 2021 AFLW Grand Final edition of the AFL Record.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The story made its way to the inbox of the Footy Record\u2019s editor and eventually onto the pages of the national publication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a nice surprise and I was really grateful to Mr Tracey for sending it in,\u201d Amelia said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mum and dad spread the news to our family and other people \u2013 they were very excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amelia, who is about to turn 13, has been playing the game since she was in Grade 4 and says she took it up because her family members are avid footy fans, with Amelia barracking for Essendon.<\/p>\n<p>The keen midfielder, who attended Lara Lake Primary School and also plays basketball, is currently preparing to try out for the Sacred Heart football team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just love playing on a team and I really like the rules of the game,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s a game you can play with friends which is really good.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51576\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51576\" style=\"width: 185px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51576\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/ScreenShot2021-04_41492-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"299\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51576\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cover of the Record from the Crows v Lions Grand Final edition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tracey said Amelia\u2019s piece stood out because it made the reader feel as if they were out there on the footy field with her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I read her piece, I thought it deserved a wider audience and decided to send it off to the AFL,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a lovely surprise when the editor of the Footy Record phoned to ask if I thought Amelia would be interested in having her piece published in the AFWL Grand Final Edition of the AFL Record. I was proud and excited for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Amelia does eventually achieve her goal of playing women\u2019s football at the highest level she will be in good company, with several Sacred Heart alumni currently playing in the AFLW.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SPORTS enthusiast Amelia Courtney has big dreams of one day playing in the AFLW.
