{"id":51639,"date":"2021-04-29T02:00:09","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T15:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=51639"},"modified":"2021-05-04T15:05:57","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T04:05:57","slug":"work-on-wetlands-is-well-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/work-on-wetlands-is-well-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"Work on wetlands is well under way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN EXPANSIVE wetlands and reserve area is taking shape on the western side of the Armstrong Creek Town Centre.<\/p>\n<p>A large basin has been dug out beside Burvilles Road to create the wetlands which will be used to control stormwater run-off and flood zones.<\/p>\n<p>The wetlands project forms an important part of Wel.Co\u2019s $1 billion development of the 40-hectare Armstrong Creek Town Centre site.<\/p>\n<p>Wel.Co development manager Joel Mitchell said excavation works were now complete and all associated services had been installed as part of planned water sensitive urban design (WSUD) for the area.<\/p>\n<p>Clay lining and rock retaining walls are currently under construction at the site which will eventually feature a large expanse of water surrounded by native vegetation to support native flora and fauna.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mitchell said he expected the project to be complete by September or October this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51642\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51642\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51642\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/IMG_0116_45781-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The wetlands and reserve has an expected completion date of September or October. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d like to think of it as a natural reserve once it is completed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlantings will help to filter the water and provide nutrients to support natural wildlife as part of the bigger ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, we will plant a lot of trees to help the wetlands blend into the natural landscape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArmstrong Creek Town Centre is being developed with environmental and sustainable principles in place and we are very mindful of implementing these measures as part of the development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s why we wanted to make the wetlands into more of a natural reserve rather than just a water run-off basin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51644\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51644\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51644\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/IMG_0115_95489-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51644\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Work has begun to transform the site into a wetlands and reserve area, with the excavation stage now complete. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong Creek is one of Australia\u2019s fastest growing suburbs with 11.6 per cent population growth per annum forecast over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>The Town Centre is seen as the commercial and social heart of this growth area and is bounded by the Surf Coast Highway, Boundary Road, Burvilles Road and Barwarre Road.<\/p>\n<p>Last week it was announced Wel.Co had sold the Armstrong Creek Shopping Centre to listed fund manager Home Consortium\u2019s Daily Needs REIT for $55.6 million, with settlement to happen at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AN EXPANSIVE wetlands and reserve area is taking shape on the western side of the Armstrong Creek Town Centre.
