	{"id":51827,"date":"2021-05-06T00:32:47","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T13:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=51827"},"modified":"2021-05-05T10:46:35","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T23:46:35","slug":"demand-for-local-organic-sourdough-continues-to-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/demand-for-local-organic-sourdough-continues-to-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Demand for local organic sourdough continues to rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCKDOWN saw many people attempt to bake homemade organic sourdough with terabytes and petabytes of smartphone videos posted on Instagram and TikTok documenting the unexpected global trend.<\/p>\n<p>As life in Australia returns to normal, the love of the loaf has continued even if people no longer have the time to bake the bread themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Iconic Surf Coast bakery Zeally Bay Sourdough has ridden the wave of demand and taken organic baking to the next level with its popular single origin bio-dynamic loaf.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Mallee Loaf\u2019 was the star of a recent ABC Landline program where the show visited the bakery, as well as the Mallee region and the farm where the grain for the bio-dynamic loaf was sourced.<\/p>\n<p>Co-founder John Farnan was happy with the exposure but warns everything is not what it seems in the world of organic baking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA loaf of bread is a bit of a mystery bag in a sense. If it\u2019s not fully labelled it\u2019s not fully describing the ingredients,\u201d Mr Farnan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA little bit of organic is sold as mostly or totally organic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zeally Bay Sourdough is a local pioneer in certified organic and bio-dynamic breads and other pantry products such as muesli and granola.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/JoelFarnan_99879.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"454\" \/><\/p>\n<p>John and his wife Jan have been making their unique organic bread since 1980 at Wholefoods Kitchen in Geelong, well before sourdough became a household staple.<\/p>\n<p>John says that \u2018greenwash\u2019 and \u2018organic-wash\u2019 is on the rise and many consumers might think the bread they are getting is organic when it actually isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople talk about local province and traceability but you can\u2019t beat the old organic certification because it\u2019s fully documented from the grower to the end user,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Zeally Bay Sourdough is motivated by doing good rather than profit and has its roots in 1970s surf culture and the bakery\u2019s home on the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>John arrived in Torquay in 1976 in his kombi van from South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came to Torquay because we followed that kind of surfing lifestyle,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In 1981, John started a cafe called Wholefoods Kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>From the beginning they had the ethos of making everything themselves.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/JohnFarnan_07152.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"609\" \/>\u201cWe started out making chapatis,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor every sandwich we sold, it\u2019s ridiculously hard work when made from scratch, but we were young and silly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John had a romantic view of an alternative lifestyle that was perhaps influenced in part by the movie Morning of the Earth, a legendary film among the surfing community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was about going up country, leaving the city and leading a non-materialistic sort of life in the countryside, growing your own veggies, keeping goats, all that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I use the word \u2018hippy\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 70 John is still surfing and sees parallels in his own journey with those now making the move away from the city due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The business now employs more than 40 people and they distribute their sought-after products all across the Surf Coast, Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula to the edges of Gippsland and as far down as Port Fairy and Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe send our muesli and granola even further and people can buy it online too,\u201d John says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOCKDOWN saw many people attempt to bake homemade organic sourdough with terabytes and petabytes of smartphone videos posted on Instagram and TikTok documenting the unexpected global trend.
