	{"id":52107,"date":"2021-05-11T18:28:47","date_gmt":"2021-05-11T07:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=52107"},"modified":"2021-07-27T17:15:34","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T07:15:34","slug":"something-special-brewing-at-souwest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/something-special-brewing-at-souwest\/","title":{"rendered":"Something special brewing at Sou&#8217;West"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A VISION two years in the making has come to fruition with the opening of the Sou\u2019West Brewery in Torquay.<\/p>\n<p>The architecturally-designed venue has capacity for 400 patrons and is anything but what you might expect from a typical brewery.<\/p>\n<p>Tucked away in the Surf Coast Social space off Baines Crescent \u2013 the site of the former Quiksilver headquaters \u2013 Sou\u2019West wows from the moment you step foot inside thanks to its soaring timber-lined ceilings and superb fit-out with a refined yet relaxed colour palette.<\/p>\n<p>Deep forest green hues on the timber work throughout reference the leafy coastal surrounds, wooden tables and booth seating create a sense of warmth and cosiness, and plants throughout add a softness and natural appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The gleaming stainless steel brewing tanks, visible through floor-to-ceiling windows from the dining room, rightly take pride of place behind the main bar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52108\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52108\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/IMG_2925_26767.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Head brewer at Sou&#8217;West Brewery Luke Scott is excited by the opportunity to help build something from the ground up. Photo: KYLIE OLIVER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The venue itself comprises three dining areas including the light-filled tasting room for casual dining, the large main dining room and family room with children\u2019s play area.<\/p>\n<p>Award-winning Melbourne architectural design firm Ewert Leaf worked wonders with the space and venue manager Tyler Ellery is delighted with the overall look and feel that\u2019s been achieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m absolutely thrilled. Photo: CAMERON MURRAY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI moved here in May anticipating a November opening but we had some issues with COVID and a few building obstacles but it looks absolutely amazing now it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTorquay is the gateway to the Surf Coast. Photo: CAMERON MURRAY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The brewing equipment is an American-built system that is among the best in the world and the bottling system is Italian. The brewery has the capacity to produce about 700,000 litres per annum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment the majority of the production is earmarked for sales on site here, not going out into the wholesale market,\u201d says Luke, who started his career at Fosters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to offer the beer here in an exclusive way but, in saying that, once we have volume if people are asking for the beer at other venues, we will supply them but we\u2019re not actively pushing sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luke says it is exciting to see this area emerging as a brewery destination and he feels the Sou\u2019West offering will complement, rather than compete with, the existing brewers on the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are just trying to make our beer the best we can and see if it stands up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drinks list also features an array of wines, sparkling and two spritzs. Photo: CAMERON MURRAY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The cold seafood selection offers up a ceviche, tuna tataki, kingfish sashimi, freshly shucked oysters and a seasonal seafood platter.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is a range of pizzas with house-made dough, healthy bowl options and desserts such as the \u201cbeeramisu\u201d. There are many gluten-free options and a dedicated kids\u2019 menu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think breweries can be looked upon as quite blokey with fried foods,\u201d says Alex, who has worked at a suite of top restaurants including Jamie Oliver\u2019s Fifteen and Neil Perry\u2019s Rockpool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a large menu designed to suit a broad demographic but I think the attention to detail and quality that we\u2019re putting into it is what separates our menu from a lot of others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sou\u2019West Brewery opens Wednesday 4pm-9pm, Thursday to Friday 12pm-9pm and Saturday and Sunday 11am- 9pm.
