Ms Coker officially launched the project, which began on May 17, during a visit to Bellbrae Primary School.<\/p>\n
Joining staff and students, Ms Coker spoke about the need to take climate action by reducing the region\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people know that climate action matters and they know emission reduction matters,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cReducing our carbon footprint by walking or riding to school, eating less red meat, reducing our waste and turning off the lights and appliances at the end of the day, are just some of the ways students are going to take action.\u201d<\/p>\n
The four-week challenge is designed to raise awareness for climate change and encourage primary and secondary schools in the region to investigate ways they can make a difference while pledging to reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe live in a pristine, beautiful environment. It\u2019s up to all of us to help preserve our natural environment and do what we can to mitigate against climate change,\u201d Ms Coker said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people are very well informed about this issue and passionate about making a difference.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really excited to be working with them on this inaugural project.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the Friday visit, staff and students showed Ms Coker the measures already implemented at their school which includes an edible garden and a new bin system for recycling.<\/p>\n
Sustainability coordinator Lachlan Hurell said the school had been encouraging students to look after the planet through various activities and teachings.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur sustainability program helps children to see that their actions can make a difference,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cStudents have many opportunities to work on a variety of hands-on projects of practical benefit to the school environment and wider community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese learning experiences provide children with the opportunity to cultivate the vast and widely documented intellectual, physical and psychological benefits of environmental education.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the end of the four-week challenge each school will submit their project to a judging panel with the winning schools to be announced on Friday, June 18.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
