THE Torquay Cricket Club has launched a search for a new women’s coach as it looks to build on a successful first two seasons of female cricket.<\/p>\n
The Tigers have been leaders in the formative years of the Barwon Women’s Cricket Competition, as one of only three clubs in the region to field two teams in the inaugural 2019-20 season.<\/p>\n
Last summer, one of those teams \u2013 Torquay Black \u2013 emerged as a premiership contender, finishing on top of the ladder before bowing out in a close semi-final.<\/p>\n
Torquay’s talented junior players also made an impact, with Georgie Mackay, Isabella Dunne, Tiahnee McGrath and Abigail Edwards all selected in Geelong representative teams.<\/p>\n
Torquay president Rob Dunne said the vacant coaching position presented an exciting opportunity.<\/p>\n
“The contribution our female cricketers have made to the overall culture of our club has been amazing, and we are keen to grow this further and support women’s cricket as strongly as we can,” he said.<\/p>\n
“We have a very talented group of players who are passionate about cricket and want to see our club do well. We’re looking for a coach who’ll strengthen our already positive environment and help take our teams to the next level.”<\/p>\n
Torquay junior girls co-ordinator Sarah Boak, who played in Torquay Black in 2019-20, said the playing group would be hungry for success in 2021-22.<\/p>\n
“We’re coming off a great season where we played well in the semi-final, but couldn’t quite get over the line,” Boak said.<\/p>\n
“It was really disappointing and the girls have been talking a lot in the off-season about how we want to come out firing this season.<\/p>\n
“I think that makes our club a really appealing place for a coach because the players will be ready to learn and determined to improve.<\/p>\n
“Most of all, the club is a fun place where new members are welcomed and there is great support between female and male players.”<\/p>\n
