THE next chapter of the Winchelsea Shire Hall is about to be written, following the approval of a plan to transform the bluestone building into a vibrant community hub.<\/p>\n
At their meeting last week, the Surf Coast Shire council agreed to lease the historic building to Winchelsea Community House for the next three years, with the aim of opening the doors to the hall in January.<\/p>\n
Cr Heather Wellington was pleased the Winchelsea community would soon be able to enjoy the space in a diverse range of ways.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter a difficult period for the hall, exacerbated by the pandemic, this really is something to be excited about,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d like to congratulate the Winchelsea Community House for its innovative proposal, which includes scope to trial a range of activities, such as exhibitions, story time for children, youth drop-ins and fun curry and pizza nights with townsfolk.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil\u2019s Maternal Child and Health Services, and the Visitor Information Centre, will also be accommodated in this new community hub.\u201d<\/p>\n
The agreement reflects extensive community engagement over the past two years and is based on feedback from a community working group and the results of a town-wide survey.<\/p>\n
To support the success of the project, the shire will provide financial assistance to the community house to enable it operate the facility for the next three years, with the aim for it to be self-sustaining in the future.<\/p>\n
The shire will also invest $105,000 in the fit out and furnishing of the community hub to create a welcoming space that can be used for an increased range of activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis beautiful hall is part of Winchelsea\u2019s history and identity and I\u2019m delighted this important building will soon resume its place as the heart of the town once again,\u201d Cr Schonfelder said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis milestone presents a fantastic opportunity for council and the Winchelsea community to resolve a long-term issue and focus on the future.<\/p>\n
