{"id":56999,"date":"2021-08-19T04:00:05","date_gmt":"2021-08-18T18:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=56999"},"modified":"2021-08-18T13:44:22","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T03:44:22","slug":"50-year-storm-bells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/50-year-storm-bells\/","title":{"rendered":"50-Year Storm rides the swell at Bells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE 50-Year Storm Invitational has finally landed a wave, with participants paddling out on Monday this week to take on the famous Bells Beach break in the event\u2019s fifth year.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions were \u201cstorm surf\u201d in the triple overhead size (8-10 feet and above) waves at the Bells bowl.<\/p>\n<p>The field featured 30 publicly-voted local surfers, both male and female, aged between 16 and 56, riding boards between six feet and nine feet long.<\/p>\n<p>There were three heats of 10 surfers, each judged on their best single wave with a score out of 100 points.<\/p>\n<p>Held in memory of former world junior surfing champion Shaun Brooks, the event is not so much about crowning a winner, but about the coming together of a community all in the name of raising awareness towards mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Stevenson took out the best surfer award despite having no sleep after working all night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is such a special event and I feel honoured to win this event today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really fun, it was a storm and the reason behind the event is no joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Angela Ball won the Johnny Utah Award (a nod to <em>Point Break<\/em>, the film that inspired the event\u2019s title) with a late takeoff and then surfed all the way to the Winki Pop Button after taking some heavy wipeouts earlier in her heat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57014\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57014\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-57014\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Untitled-design-1-5-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Untitled-design-1-5-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Untitled-design-1-5-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Untitled-design-1-5-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Untitled-design-1-5.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-57014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angela Ball is all smiles after a hard-charging ride, which would eventually earn her the Johnny Utah Award.
