TWO new bike stations will help encourage different perspectives on the landscape and lived experiences of Torquay, as well as fun, family-centred opportunities for gathering, recreating, socialising and shopping in the town’s CBD.<\/p>\n
The stations, which are set to be located at Taylor Park and the corner of Cliff Street and Bristol Road, are part of the Council’s Connecting Torquay Town Centre strategy with both set to be built in early to mid-September.<\/p>\n
Surf Coast Shire mayor Libby Stapleton is excited that the stations are being built, especially due to how they highlight the culture that has been built down in Torquay.<\/p>\n
“We’re thrilled that Jeff [Raglus] has created art pieces that are long-lasting and functional as bike stations, as well as revealing the nature of the surf culture of Torquay and our connection to indigenous flora,” Cr Stapleton said.<\/p>\n
“They will be a great talking point to show visitors to our town.”<\/p>\n
The bike stations’ materials are fully sourced locally, including materials such as cypress, which can be found in Aireys Inlet, carved by artist Mr Raglus at his home by chainsaw and chisel alongside metalworker and foundry owner Derek Johns.<\/p>\n
“The designs are intended to be uplifting and positive, as well as integrating with their surroundings,” Mr Raglus said.<\/p>\n
“There’s a slightly humorous and childlike ‘pop-art’ style flowing between all the parts, with the bike stand itself made in matched coloured powder coated steel.”<\/p>\n
Mr Raglus is a contemporary artist who shares his time between music and visual art projects, assisting with the imaging of major surf brand Mambo in the past, among others.<\/p>\n
The Connecting Torquay Town Centre project also includes car parking along Taylor Park at Zeally Bay Road and Fischer Street, as well as new pedestrian crossings and wayfinding signage in the town centre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
