LIFE Saving Victoria (LSV) is urging beachgoers to swim between the red and yellow flags this holidayseason following four drownings in recent weeks, including at Breamlea and Skenes Creek.<\/p>\n
Extra lifeguards went on patrol over the Christmas to New Year period, which is traditionally the busiest time on Victorian beaches.<\/p>\n
Figures from the latest Victorian Drowning Report, released by LSV at the start of December, show that 32 per cent of drowning deaths in Victoria occurred in a bay, beach or ocean environment.<\/p>\n
According to the Royal Life Saving Society\u2019s Summer Drowning Toll, there have been 28 drowning deaths as of December 31. However, this is lower than the 47 drowning deaths at the same time last year.<\/p>\n
LSV lifesaving operations manager Greg Scott says it\u2019s important people realise just how dangerous beaches can be, even on a calm day.<\/p>\n
\u201cConditions can change quickly so we ask people to check weather forecasts and monitor the conditions. To ensure your day at the beach is an enjoyable one, consider your own abilities as well as the abilities of any children or family members with you, before entering the water. Know how to identify and avoid rip currents.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
He said to swim at patrolled beaches when possible, so our lifesavers can help keep you safe.<\/p>\n
Lifesavers patrol 57 locations on weekends over summer and during the peak period lifeguards are employed to patrol on weekdays and at additional locations. For more information on patrolled locations and times, head to beachsafe.org.au.<\/p>\n
A 63-year-old Breamlea man drowned at Bremlea last Wednesday evening (December 27). A police spokesperson said members of the public noticed him in the water close to Blyth Street shortly before 6pm and dragged him to the shore before calling Triple Zero.
