THE fight for Corangamite is now a four-cornered contest, with Alex Marshall announcing last week she would stand in the seat for the Greens.<\/p>\n
The disability support worker and Bachelor of Commerce student said inaction on climate issues and the economic and social failures of the major parties would be key factors in the coming federal election.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a great honour to be given the opportunity to represent the people of Corangamite at a national level and if elected, I will advocate for all constituents and for the current and future needs of the region,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She said Australia faced a critical decade.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly the Greens have a plan to tackle the serious problems we face, and I think the people of Corangamite are ready to become part of that solution, by helping establish a Greens coalition government in this country.<\/p>\n
\u201cVoting Greens is the only answer to the challenges we face.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe major parties have failed, and we are out of time. Both are paralyzed by their reliance on political donations from the fossil fuel corporations and their obligation to the billionaire class.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is good reason for hope, because my party has a comprehensive program of social and economic reforms to turn Australia around and reposition it for a sustainable and prosperous future.<\/p>\n
“People are ready for a Green new deal, and a new hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of Ms Marshall\u2019s most urgent priorities is a Treaty with First Nations people.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly through truth-telling and justice can we heal the wounds of the past, embrace the rich and ancient heritage of this land and move forward together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cEmbracing the wisdom and knowledge of traditional cultures can only help us to protect our land and water, tackle the climate crisis and deal with ballooning economic inequality.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Marshall has led and worked on many grassroots campaigns including Fight for the Bight and pushing for the Climate Emergency declaration at the Surf Coast Shire.<\/p>\n
In 2019, she was a candidate in the by-election for the Surf Coast Shire\u2019s Anglesea Ward.<\/p>\n
