{"id":60145,"date":"2021-11-03T04:15:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T17:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=60145"},"modified":"2021-10-27T11:26:54","modified_gmt":"2021-10-27T00:26:54","slug":"gazzard-and-kowalik-round-out-2021-torquay-angler-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/gazzard-and-kowalik-round-out-2021-torquay-angler-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Gazzard and Kowalik round out 2021 Torquay Angler awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LAST weekend\u2019s junior prize giving lunch was a welcome sight at the Torquay Angling Club after what has been a difficult 18 months of sporadic COVID-19 lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>Several awards were given out to the kids of almost 30 parents in attendance with a variety of great prizes on offer such as quality fishing rods, reels and trophies, followed by a barbecue lunch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese presentations encourage juniors into the sport and recognise their achievements especially in front of their peers, particularly now,\u201d club president Peter Sharp said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last 18 months we have had virtually no social interaction, junior or senior, so Saturday was a really good opportunity to get the people back together and catch up with old friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The club\u2019s Brag Board also made an appearance, showcasing the biggest catches of 12 categories of fish such as snapper, whiting, gummy shark, flathead, sweep, squid and more.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the main awards of Saturday afternoon\u2019s proceedings included the John Ainsworth Memorial Trophy and the Junior Club Champion.<\/p>\n<p>The former of the two awards was presented by John\u2019s sister Anne Udvardy to young gun Chase Kowalik.<\/p>\n<p>The John Ainsworth Memorial Trophy is awarded each year to the angler considered most inspirational amongst the junior ranks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 513px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/DSCN3783_68021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"513\" height=\"385\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay Angling&#8217;s John Ainsworth Memorial Trophy winner Chase Kowalik with Anne Udvardy, Mr Ainsworth&#8217;s sister.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Sharp presented the award for Junior Club Champion to Sam Gazzard for accumulating the most points over the last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast weekend\u2019s presentation was just a great chance to get the club back together and as we move forward and get more restrictions eased, we\u2019ll be doing more member gatherings,\u201d Mr Sharp said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurprisingly, we have 400 members, most of whom are local, but there are a number of people from Melbourne and other areas who holiday here, and with the state opening up there will be more people to make new friends with and grow the club.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Torquay Angling Club encourages all juniors to weigh in their catches so they can be part of the competitions this year.<\/p>\n<p>Head to torquayfish.com.au for more information on the club as a whole.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LAST weekend\u2019s junior prize giving lunch was a welcome sight at the Torquay Angling Club after what has been a difficult 18 months of sporadic COVID-19 lockdowns.
