{"id":60381,"date":"2021-11-07T04:00:26","date_gmt":"2021-11-06T17:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=60381"},"modified":"2021-11-03T09:53:29","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T22:53:29","slug":"head-shaving-raises-big-in-double-edged-fundraiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/head-shaving-raises-big-in-double-edged-fundraiser\/","title":{"rendered":"Head shaving raises big in double-edged fundraiser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL cafe employee has surpassed her fundraising goal of $3,000 for a charity dear to her heart, after many months of delay.<\/p>\n<p>Scarlett von Brandenstein has wanted to host her fundraising event \u201cShave for SIDS and Wigs 4 Kids\u201d since May.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, after months of restrictions, Scarlett held the charity event at her workplace Ginger Monkey cafe on Thursday, with proceeds going to the River\u2019s Gift and Wigs for Kids charities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/20211028_ScarlettSh_78385.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"354\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scarlett von Brandenstein before shaving her head.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>River\u2019s Gift was established in 2011 by Karl Waddell and Alex Hamilton who lost their first-born child River to SIDS.<\/p>\n<p>The charity has since raised more than $1.5 million to fund world-leading scientific research, providing safe sleep education, \u2018uniting\u2019 SIDS families and raising awareness of the devastating syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>Scarlett\u2019s aunt knew Ms Hamilton through a mother\u2019s group, which is where the idea for her fundraiser was born.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/20211028_ScarlettSh_07301.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"365\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fundraiser Scarlett von Brandenstein getting her head shaven.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thanks to Scarlett\u2019s six-month social media campaign she raised $2,900 in total, with the remainder of her fundraising goal to be achieved at her charity event.<\/p>\n<p>Friends and family made up the capped COVID-19 limit at Ginger Monkey where attendees helped Scarlett raise a total of $3,810 through drink sales at the event and a raffle, which included prizes from local businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really special moment for me to be able to have my friends and family gathered around,\u201d Scarlett said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust having the main focus of the afternoon be on such a worthwhile cause, I felt so whole and complete after the event itself, because honestly it was all very last minute and the turnout we got was great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scarlett\u2019s future aspirations in becoming a midwife were also a major factor in kickstarting her fundraiser, noting that SIDS is not spoken about as much as it should be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hoping to get into midwifery because I love babies,\u201d Scarlett said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it (SIDS) just isn\u2019t that well-known, but it is a huge issue, so the cause I\u2019m raising funds for is a great one and one I\u2019m really interested in continuing to learn about.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/IMG_8985_96594.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"312\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fundraiser Scarlett von Brandenstein holding her shaven hair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to the funds raised, the hair shaved off Scarlett\u2019s head was donated to the initiative Wigs for Kids, an organisation that creates wigs for children undergoing cancer treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Head to givenow.com.au\/crowdraiser\/public\/shaveforsidsandwigs4kids if you would like to contribute to Scarlett\u2019s fundraising.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL cafe employee has surpassed her fundraising goal of $3,000 for a charity dear to her heart, after many months of delay.
