{"id":60974,"date":"2021-11-18T04:15:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T17:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=60974"},"modified":"2021-11-17T20:36:36","modified_gmt":"2021-11-17T09:36:36","slug":"womens-shed-has-all-the-right-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/womens-shed-has-all-the-right-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s Shed has all the right tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>YEAR 9 students have resumed their classes at the Torquay Community Women\u2019s Shed and now they have the necessary tools to do so.<\/p>\n<p>After a generous donation from their neighbours at the Torquay Community Men\u2019s Shed, the Women\u2019s Shed has received several power tools to better facilitate their weekly classes with female students from Surf Coast Secondary College.<\/p>\n<p>The items donated by the Men\u2019s Shed included a circular saw, power drill, electric planer and a bundle of additional hand tools, which will allow participants to create more advanced builds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese tools will allow us to use more than just hand tools or worry about whether the batteries needed for other tools are charged or not,\u201d education support teacher at Surf Coast Secondary Katrina Simpson said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Simpson runs several weekly 90-minute classes at the Torquay Women\u2019s Shed, with four girls from Surf Coast Secondary taking part in each class.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between Surf Coast Secondary and the nearby Men\u2019s Shed started 10 years ago when it began running a similar project with male students.<\/p>\n<p>The school found that their female students also wanted to enhance their pre-employment and job skills.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/IMG_1383_08622.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ex-TCH coordinator Laura Connor, TCH administrator Thurid Pfeiffer, students Molly Brooks, Chloe Jacobs, Men&#8217;s Shed president Trevor Sawyer, Lola Taylor, Lola Morden, Surf Coast Secondary vice principal Rachel Barney and Katrina Simpson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today, the program continues to run despite a disjointed last 18 months and now the female participants have the power tools to resume their classes with a bang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have got quite a lot of students at Surf Coast Secondary who are interested in the Men\u2019s Shed and Women\u2019s Shed so we rotate in new groups each term,\u201d Ms Simpson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe undertake many different construction projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, we have done bare desktops, coffee cup gardens, bird feeders, phone charging units and we are about to get underway with Christmas decorations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Simpson believes the most important parts of the program are the shared experiences that the program creates, the ability to learn from mistakes and building better relationships within the community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 537px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/IMG_1390_62691.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"358\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Molly Brooks, Chloe Jacobs, Lola Taylor and Lola Morden exchanging power tools with Men&#8217;s Shed president Trevor Sawyer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>President of the Torquay Community Men\u2019s Shed, Trevor Sawyer, understands how valuable the club\u2019s donations will be to the Women\u2019s Shed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the right tools to build things means so much,\u201d Mr Sawyer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGirls these days don\u2019t want to sit around and do arts and crafts, they want to learn and that\u2019s why we donated these tools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople like Ms Simpson will teach them how to use these tools and then these students will have the ability to put back into the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both sheds are located at the rear of the Torquay Community House at 14 Price Street, Torquay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>YEAR 9 students have resumed their classes at the Torquay Community Women\u2019s Shed and now they have the necessary tools to do so.
