<\/p>\nTHE City of Greater Geelong has unveiled an ultra-modern, three-level concept design for Armstrong Creek\u2019s $18.48-million library and community hub, reflecting the city\u2019s designation as a UNESCO City of Design.<\/p>\n
The Armstrong Creek Town Centre Library and Community Hub is the result of a collaboration between architect firm Buchan, the City of Greater Geelong, Geelong Regional Library Corporation, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and the community.<\/p>\n
The environmentally sensitive and technology-rich library and community hub within the town centre, close to schools, open space and proposed cultural and sporting facilities, is set to be completed by early 2024.<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said concept design reflected the community\u2019s vision of a state-of-the-art, environmentally sensitive, technologically enabled, library and community space, that catered to the diverse needs of the growing local community while celebrating Wadawurrung culture.<\/p>\n
The 2,500-square-metre library will feature a collection of 40,000 books and resources, flexible and easily accessible spaces for children\u2019s learning, youth programs and dedicated multi-purpose meeting spaces on level one, with creative spaces and bookable co-working amenities on level two.<\/p>\n
The ground floor will serve as the civic interface with direct access to the external terraces and the town centre.<\/p>\n

Buchan worked with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and the council in developing a \u2018Living Water\u2019 design that respected and embraced the area\u2019s Wadawurrung cultural heritage.<\/p>\n
Buchan lead architect Aleksander Borek said the circular windows around the building\u2019s perimeter represented solidarity and a united local community, while creating a \u201cnatural and fluid envelope for the internal spaces\u201d.<\/p>\n
Geelong Regional Library Corporation chief executive officer Vanessa Schernickau said local people had shared their ideas for modern, accessible library that would be inspirational in design.<\/p>\n
Ms Schernickau said the concept design was also for a building that is sensitive to the environment, reflecting and celebrating Wadawurrung culture.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe library will include a dedicated children\u2019s area, creative and co-working spaces, meeting rooms and indoor\/outdoor areas \u2013 all features that will undoubtedly make this a much-loved and practical gathering and working space, providing a true \u2018heart\u2019 for the community.<\/p>\n

The proposed design caters for a five-star Green Star rating and incorporates best practice environmental design principles, use of sustainable, environmentally friendly and robust materials and energy efficient low maintenance fixtures.<\/p>\n
