{"id":61346,"date":"2021-11-30T04:15:57","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T17:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=61346"},"modified":"2021-11-24T11:55:20","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T00:55:20","slug":"lorne-fishing-safety-jackets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/lorne-fishing-safety-jackets\/","title":{"rendered":"Lorne fishing spots included in safety jacket trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ROCK fishing is an increasingly popular pastime and a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, but can also be a dangerous sport for which new safety measures are being considered at select locations, including near Lorne.<\/p>\n<p>Tragically, several rock fishers have died after being swept off coastal rock shelves.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) is seeking feedback on a proposal to require fishers to wear lifejackets when fishing at certain high-risk locations during a two-year trial.<\/p>\n<p>VFA chief executive officer Travis Dowling said the evidence was irrefutable that wearing a life jacket substantially reduced the risk of drowning in the unfortunate event that a rock fisher ends up in the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMandating the wearing of life jackets may be necessary to keep more people safe and avoid the preventable loss of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposal is to require fishers wear a lifejacket when fishing at nine dangerous locations, which have been selected based on previous rock fishing related deaths and near fatal incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are keen to understand community views on this proposal and have released a Discussion Paper for public comment. Any changes would be supported by a revamped public education campaign to encourage safe rock fishing and inform coastal fishers about appropriate safety measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, we want to help keep recreational fishing fun and safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Artillery Rocks, west of Lorne; and the rock platform opposite Sheoak Falls, south of Lorne are two of the sites included in the trial.<\/p>\n<p>The others are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Punchbowl Rocks (near San Remo)<\/li>\n<li>Cape Schanck Lighthouse rocks<\/li>\n<li>Rocks at the southern end of Potters Hill Road (San Remo)<\/li>\n<li>Rock platform near the blow holes carpark at Cape Bridgewater<\/li>\n<li>Dragon\u2019s Head at Rye back beach<\/li>\n<li>Bush Rangers Bay rocks, east of Cape Schanck, and<\/li>\n<li>Sorrento back beach rocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A discussion paper is available at the VFA&#8217;s website and feedback can be sent to <strong>haveyoursay@vfa.vic.gov.au<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Should the proposal proceed, the VFA will work with key recreational fishing groups on an education program with the aim of having any new arrangements in place by next month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ROCK fishing is an increasingly popular pastime and a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, but can also be a dangerous sport for which new safety measures are being considered at select locations, including near Lorne.
