SOUTH Barwon Labor MP Darren Cheeseman is lobbying his own government as well as the federal government to help fund the proposed library in Armstrong Creek.<\/p>\n
Mr Cheeseman launched a petition for the funding about a week after the City of Greater Geelong unveiled a concept design for the $18.48 million facility.<\/p>\n
Designed by architecture firm Buchan, the three-storey Armstrong Creek Town Centre Library and Community Hub will be built in the Armstrong Creek Town Centre and is expected to be completed by early 2024.<\/p>\n
Mr Cheeseman\u2019s petition states the Armstrong Creek growth corridor, including Mount Duneed, Armstrong Creek and Charlemont, is regional Australia\u2019s fastest growing community and deserved the same services available to established communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is important that all levels of government in partnership fund important community infrastructure, such as roads, sporting clubrooms and kinders. A public library would be a worthwhile addition to the social and community infrastructure of Armstrong Creek.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe therefore call on all levels of government to make a worthwhile contribution to this important local infrastructure project and make sure that the Armstrong Creek Library becomes a reality.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany local governments across Australia have reimagined the services that can be provided by a public library, including free internet, learning spaces, creative studios and playrooms for kids.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis new facility would be well-used by everyone in the Geelong community, even outside the Armstrong Creek area.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Cheeseman said he had written to Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane to support the City of Greater Geelong\u2019s application for funding through the Victorian Government\u2019s Living Libraries Infrastructure Fund.<\/p>\n
\u201cLibraries have always been a way for vulnerable residents to access information and services that they would otherwise not be able to.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am excited that a library is on the cards for Armstrong Creek and its new and growing communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am advocating for the Victorian and Australian Governments to join with the Geelong council and contribute to the funding of this important piece of community infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you support the proposed library, please sign this petition.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 2,500 sqm library will feature a collection of 40,000 books and resources, flexible and easily accessible spaces for children\u2019s learning, youth programs and dedicated multi-purpose meeting spaces on level one, with creative spaces and bookable co-working amenities on level two.<\/p>\n
The ground floor will serve as the civic interface with direct access to the external terraces and the town centre.<\/p>\n
