{"id":61863,"date":"2021-12-10T04:00:35","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T17:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=61863"},"modified":"2021-12-08T11:11:52","modified_gmt":"2021-12-08T00:11:52","slug":"aus-open-silverware-makes-surf-coast-appearance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/aus-open-silverware-makes-surf-coast-appearance\/","title":{"rendered":"Aus Open silverware makes Surf Coast appearance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surfcoast Tennis Club was in esteemed company Friday afternoon as the Australian Open men\u2019s and women\u2019s trophies made their way to Spring Creek Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The trophies visit was accompanied by entertainment for the kids, food and drinks, and live music from local musician Tom Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>Friday was also an emotional day for the club, as they farewelled long-standing coach Peter Hubacek after 32 years amid his impending retirement, with his coaching duties to conclude at the end of Term 1 next year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/SurfCoastTennis6_56262.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"324\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Surfcoast Tennis Club coaching team including Peter Hubacek (third from right).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Administrator for the club and the event\u2019s organiser Kristie Walters said more than 200 people attended the event, an occasion that many kids will remember for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuckily enough, we were one of only four tennis clubs across the state that got the chance to see the trophies,\u201d Ms Walters said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, our head coach, Peter Hubacek, who\u2019s been our head coach for more than three decades has announced his retirement from coaching, so this was the start of what I call his \u2018retirement tour\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great opportunity to see young tennis players getting inspired by seeing these trophies and it\u2019s great to see that Tennis Australia really cares about its regional clubs and doing these things for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 515px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/SurfCoastTennis1_46769.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"344\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kids of all ages also had the chance to play tennis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The event was pulled together in just a couple of weeks when Tennis Australia notified the club that they would host the trophies, but Ms Walters\u2019 advertising got several local tennis clubs to attend such as Grovedale, Moriac, Aireys Inlet and Anglesea for the chance to see the silverware.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were just so happy to be out and at a community event,\u201d Ms Walters said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really lovely family environment, and a lot of kids, parents and grandparents were eager to take pictures with the cups and talk with the representatives about the trophies.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/SurfCoastTennis4_80380.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"354\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup (Women&#8217;s) and the Norman Brooks Challenge Cup (Men&#8217;s) on display at Spring Creek Reserve.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Australian Open kicks off in just over a month on January 17, 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surfcoast Tennis Club was in esteemed company Friday afternoon as the Australian Open men\u2019s and women\u2019s trophies made their way to Spring Creek Reserve.
