TORQUAY\u2019S Ungrind Your Mind drew an appreciative crowd to its debut event last month.<\/p>\n
More than 100 people attended the free forum, which aimed to debunk, destigmatise and normalise discussion surrounding mental health issues in the community.<\/p>\n
Activities at Ocean Grind in Torquay North included tree planting and yoga, and a keynote speech from former Lifeline Australia chief executive officer Dawn O\u2019Neil.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery aspect of it was uplifting, enjoyable whilst being meaningful, respectful and educational,\u201d Ms O\u2019Neil said afterwards.<\/p>\n
\u201cI learned so much as I am sure everyone there did.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really hope it can be done again next year as I am sure word of mouth will ensure more people come to revel in the whole experience – just brilliant!\u201d<\/p>\n
Ungrind Your Mind organiser Ferne Millen said it was a very successful day.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a great panel team who all felt very positive about the outcomes of the event and the importance of it as we emerge out of these past two years of difficulties and COVID.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo shake it all off, Wild Moves led us in traditional African rhythms with drumbeats and dance to finish off what was a very balanced and well received forum event.\u201d<\/p>\n
Special guests included Geelong MP Christine Couzens, Member for Western Victoria Andy Meddick, Surf Coast Shire mayor Libby Stapleton and Cr Rose Hodge, and Gretchen Gibson from Torquay Community Enterprise.<\/p>\n
\u201cMental health doesn\u2019t discriminate, it can affect anyone at anytime and awareness of its symptoms should be recognised,\u201d Cr Hodge said.<\/p>\n
\u201cKnowing where to reach out for help either personally or for others is so important.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Ungrind Your Mind forum provided experts with professional advice that really illuminated the need for knowledge for self-awareness. It was an enlightening forum, I\u2019m so very glad I attended.\u201d<\/p>\n
Feed Me Surf Coast’s new van \u201cGloria\u201d also made its debut at the event, donated to Brooke Murphy at Feed Me Surf Coast by Phil Stammers from Headsox in honour of his late mother Gloria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
