THE Surf Coast Shire is seeking more than $700,000 in federal funding for its highest priority road project, which will improve safety at the intersection of Blackgate and Horseshoe Bend roads.<\/p>\n
The council has elevated fixing the intersection to the top of its list as it provides an important connection between Torquay, Barwon Heads and Armstrong Creek, is showing increasing volumes of traffic, and is a popular cycling route.<\/p>\n
At their December 14 meeting, councillors unanimously resolved to nominate the intersection upgrade project as part of its funding allocation in the federal government\u2019s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.<\/p>\n
Now in its third phase, the program supports councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n
The improvement works would feature the installation of an innovative compact roundabout and cycling lanes that will ensure a much safer passage for all users.<\/p>\n
The total project cost is $752,120, including a council contribution of $50,000.<\/p>\n
Cr Adrian Schonfelder said a recent road safety audit recommended a roundabout as the best long-term treatment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re seeing an increase in traffic in this area from residents in the north of Torquay and from our neighbouring municipality via Armstrong Creek.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s important that we continue to adapt to this additional pressure on our local roads, and play our part to keep people safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cReducing speed through the intersection decreases the potential for high speed and high impact accidents for traffic, particularly motorists travelling through the intersection and turning right.\u201d<\/p>\n
The federal government will assess the intersection upgrade project against eligibility requirements.<\/p>\n
If approved, the project needs to be completed by June 30, 2023.<\/p>\n
The Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program aims to support jobs and the resilience of local economies, to help communities bounce back from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the council is seeking community feedback on its Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2022-2027 and its Safer Cycling Strategy.<\/p>\n
