{"id":62898,"date":"2022-01-11T04:15:37","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T17:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=62898"},"modified":"2022-01-11T18:45:01","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T07:45:01","slug":"new-year-new-country-for-latest-citizens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/new-year-new-country-for-latest-citizens\/","title":{"rendered":"New year, new country for latest citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SURF Coast Shire has welcomed its newest Australian citizens at a year-ending ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The shire welcomed 15 new citizens at its council chamber last month, who could be joined by family and friends following the easing of COVID restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>The new Australians\u2019 countries of origin included England, Ireland, Italy, England, Taiwan, New Zealand and Singapore.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/Holmes_43177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"615\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gwen Holmes, from England, with Surf Coast Shire mayor Libby Stapleton at the ceremony.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Torquay construction company owner Reice Godfrey has been a Surf Coast resident for 12 years, and officially became an Australian during the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>He is now a dual citizen with his native United Kingdom, and said his new nationality gave him peace of mind that he could travel freely to see family on both sides of the antipode without fear of a lockout.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Godfrey said not even a broken arm could stop him sharing the special moment with his Australian fianc\u00e9 Jami and children, Sonny and Bailee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d literally got out of hospital that day. We thought we\u2019d postpone it or get a babysitter, but I thought no, this means a lot and I want my kids to be there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, getting that citizenship was about the security of being able to stay in Australia with my partner and kids, where I want to be.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s been a very, very long wait and I finally got it done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was great to have it on Torquay and the Surf Coast where I\u2019ve been living since 2009.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 835px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/Carillo_09918.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"835\" height=\"626\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonathan Carillo, originally from Ecuador, receives his citizenship from Cr Stapleton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Libby Stapleton led the ceremony and greeted the Surf Coast\u2019s new Australians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to congratulate each of you on your decision to become an Australian citizen \u2013 a decision welcomed not only by me, but by all Australians,\u201d Cr Stapleton said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia values the diversity of its people and our ability to live harmoniously with one another, something we\u2019ve found more important than ever during pandemic restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past year we have proven we can support each other through difficult times with the solidarity we\u2019re renowned for as a nation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SURF Coast Shire has welcomed its newest Australian citizens at a year-ending ceremony.
