AGEING drivers are feeling safer on the road after having completed a successful round of Wiser Driver refresher courses across the Surf Coast Shire.<\/p>\n
About 80 people aged 65 to 86 have graduated during the past few weeks.<\/p>\n
The Wiser Driver course presents information, education and discussion about driving, provides up-to-date information on road rules, addresses questions or concerns participants might have and encourages participants to think about changes in their fitness or health which may impact their driving.<\/p>\n
The Surf Coast Shire funds the program with VicRoads, and presented it with project partner Hawthorn Community House.<\/p>\n
Participant comments after the four-session courses ranged from \u201cpractical and informative\u201d and \u201chighly relevant, informative and enjoyable\u201d to \u201cvery worthwhile\u201d and \u201cI needed it more than I realised\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the first year we have run the program and we are delighted with the uptake, and more importantly the responses from participants,\u201d Cr Gary Allen said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAcross the board drivers have felt reassured and brought up to speed on the latest rules and safety information and tips.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil is partnering in the program as part of our Age Friendly Strategy, aiming to keep people living independently in their own communities for as long as possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe congratulate all of our graduates, and based on the program\u2019s success we plan to run several more courses next year.\u201d<\/p>\n
There were 53 graduates from Torquay, including 20 at Kithbrooke Park, 12 in Winchelsea and 15 in Lorne.<\/p>\n
Each received a copy of the Victorian Road to Solo Driving handbook and several other useful tips and resources.<\/p>\n
Courses for 2022 will be advertised in local newspapers, on Facebook and through community groups.<\/p>\n
