SURF Coast Shire Council is approaching 1000 truckloads worth of organic waste saved from landfill in just one year but says residents can help improve the efficiency of its service.<\/p>\n
The council said this month it had composted 7541 tonnes of food and organic waste, or 837 truckloads, since it began its new collection service.<\/p>\n
The council begun collecting green-lid FOGO bins and purple-lid glass recycling receptacles from Surf Coast kerbsides at the start of February last year.<\/p>\n
But there’s still room for improvement, as Surf Coast Shire said online that it was still seeing contamination in its bin collections.<\/p>\n
“We are finding plastic plant pots, painted and treated timber and bags of garbage are being mistakenly put into in the lime green-lidded FOGO bin,” the council said.<\/p>\n
“Our compost processor is also seeing too much food still inside its plastic packaging. The staff on the sorting line do not have time to open the packaging and remove food, so it all goes to landfill.<\/p>\n
“We want all your food waste, but please take off the plastic wrapping first.”<\/p>\n
