{"id":64471,"date":"2022-02-10T14:49:48","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T03:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=64471"},"modified":"2022-02-10T14:49:48","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T03:49:48","slug":"wreck2reef-2022-swim-to-go-ahead-with-a-reduced-300-participant-cap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/wreck2reef-2022-swim-to-go-ahead-with-a-reduced-300-participant-cap\/","title":{"rendered":"Wreck2Reef 2022 swim to go ahead with a reduced 300-participant cap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WRECK2REEF organisers have confirmed this year\u2019s open water swim at Indented Head Yacht Club will proceed with a reduced 300-participant cap on Saturday, February 12.<\/p>\n<p>Wreck2Reef event director Andrew Dix said the original 500-competitor cap was cut to 300 after higher COVID-19 Omicron strain variant numbers were recorded across January.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dix said the tighter restrictions around COVID would reduce large crowds from gathering with the volunteer club unable to host post swim trophy presentations and run its usual open water swim schedule.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64480\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64480 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/2_75295-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1644464914\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Swimmers will have the option of competing in the 2.5km or 1.2km open water swim at the Wreck2Reef on Saturday, February 12.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last summer the Wreck2Reef, Indented Head Yacht Club\u2019s largest annual fundraiser, was cancelled in mid-February after Victoria went into a five-day state-wide lockdown around COVID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was primarily driven around the issue of not wanting to have large crowds of people in one place for the protection and safety of the volunteers and the people working on the event, but also for the competitors themselves,\u201d Mr Dix said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment a lot of people are reluctant to go to places where there are massive crowds and lots of people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to be able to ensure people would be able to operate an event where there weren\u2019t going to be large groups of people together and they would be able to come and safely swim in their event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the practicalities of where we are at the moment, we thought it made sense to put a slightly lower cap in place for everyone\u2019s safety and comfort levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64479\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64479 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/3_09913-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1644464913\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Action from the 2020 Wreck2Reef open water swim at Indented Head Yacht Club.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only the 2.5km and 1.2km open water swims will take place, the first event commences at 9.30am and with the final swim to conclude at 11.50am.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s our priority at the moment is being able to run an event for the people who want to come down and swim \u2013 at the moment we are confident we can do that safely for everybody,\u201d Mr Dix said.<\/p>\n<p>Funds raised from this summer\u2019s Wreck2Reef will go towards the Indented Head Yacht Club support craft.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Wreck2Reef will be part of the Great Victorian Swim Series calendar for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>To register for this summer\u2019s Wreck2Reef log onto <a href=\"https:\/\/ihyc.com.au\/wreck-2-reef-event\">https:\/\/ihyc.com.au\/wreck-2-reef-event<\/a> for more information.<br \/>\nAll competitors must pre-register prior to the event day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WRECK2REEF organisers have confirmed this year\u2019s open water swim at Indented Head Yacht Club will proceed with a reduced 300-participant cap on Saturday, February 12.
