{"id":65176,"date":"2022-03-05T04:30:28","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T17:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=65176"},"modified":"2022-03-02T09:40:16","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T22:40:16","slug":"local-vocals-ready-to-flex-chords-for-second-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/local-vocals-ready-to-flex-chords-for-second-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Vocals ready to flex chords for second year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>REGISTRATIONS are open for the Torquay-based Local Vocals All-Abilities Choir in 2022, which is expected to be an even more rewarding year than the last.<\/p>\n<p>The Local Vocals All-Abilities Choir was formed during the pandemic early in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Organiser and professional singer Dianne Makings wanted to start the choir to give people from all walks of life<br \/>\nthe opportunity to sing and perform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a singer myself I know what that \u2018buzz\u2019 feels like when performing on a stage,\u201d Ms Makings said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing else like it. It makes me really happy to know I am giving someone an opportunity to do something that they have always wanted to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love making people feel good about themselves and I can see the joy on their faces when they are performing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Makings also works in education support at St Joseph\u2019s College working with students who have additional needs.<\/p>\n<p>Local Vocals is an all-inclusive choir that welcomes everyone.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what age, gender or ability, the choir works together as a team to collaborate on songs in the hope to perform them in a public arena.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we have only been going for 12 months, we have achieved quite a lot last year. We had a couple of performances within the community,\u201d Ms Makings said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of our members, Aimee Miller, lives with an intellectual disability and is an amazing song writer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote some chords to her lyrics, and we were selected in the Top 10 finalists of the Art of the Minds Song Contest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAimee and I performed in front of an audience at the Torquay Bowls Club. Aimee received an encouragement award and $100. This is why I do what I do. To be able to give Aimee this opportunity was priceless for me and makes me so happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 369px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/DiandAimee_86385.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"492\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dianne and Aimee at this year&#8217;s Surf Coast Song Contest. Aimee&#8217;s song earned her a top 10 finish and an honourable mention.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although the choir is based in Torquay, participants do not need to live locally to attend.<\/p>\n<p>The choir also has full access for wheelchairs and offers a disabled toilet. Furthermore, singers do not have to live with a disability to be a member either, anyone can join.<br \/>\nThe first session with the choir is a free trial, but following that, participation does incur a fee of $10 each week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly don\u2019t do this for the money so if anyone has any struggles financially, they are encouraged to let me know,\u201d Ms Makings added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not turn away anyone because they are unable to pay, and I can also invoice NDIS participants.\u201d<br \/>\nMs Makings said there were numerous benefits of the choir such as the feeling of unity, reducing your anxiety and stress levels, a positive for one\u2019s mental health and social well-being, and confidence building \u2013 just to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>Reach out to Ms Makings on 0438 614 308 or localvocals3228@gmail.com to enquire about memberships.<br \/>\nSessions run every Monday between 5.45pm and 6.45pm at the TIA Hall on Price Street in Torquay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>REGISTRATIONS are open for the Torquay-based Local Vocals All-Abilities Choir in 2022, which is expected to be an even more rewarding year than the last.
