{"id":65812,"date":"2022-03-12T04:15:24","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T17:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=65812"},"modified":"2022-03-12T10:18:11","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T23:18:11","slug":"from-the-paintbrush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/from-the-paintbrush\/","title":{"rendered":"From the paintbrush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chirs Adnam\u2019s \u2018Mintji\u2019 art exhibition will open at Surfcoast Gallery in Torquay later this month.<\/p>\n<p>Mintji\u2019 is a Yolngu word loosely translated to mean \u2018sacred song from the paintbrush\u2019, and for didgeridoo player, artist, writer and surfer Chris Adnam, his exhibition \u2018Mintji\u2019 is just that; a blend of art, music, history and stories of life lived.<\/p>\n<p>Each artwork in the exhibition is accompanied by a song from Adnam\u2019s album Ocean Cowboy, co-written and produced by Peter Cupples, who will be playing at the exhibition\u2019s opening along with Lisa Edwards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my life, my journey, my songbook,\u201d Adnam said, of the exhibition which officially opens on Sunday, March 27.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally, this style of painting has been painted for a hundred thousand years, you can go into a gallery in Darwin, sit there quietly and an old man will go up to a painting and he\u2019ll start singing at it, because inside the paintings are songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s difficult for non-Aboriginal people to even understand the genius or the gist of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65966\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65966\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65966 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/IMG_1538-480x380.jpg?_t=1646731043\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65966\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chris Adnam said in his &#8216;Mintji&#8217; exhibition he tells many of the stories of his time in Arnhem Land, particularly sacred moments he could not record with photos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1990s Adnam was adopted by the Yolngu people in North East Arnhem land, where he lived for six years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very fortunate to go into this area and it gave me an absolute curiosity to go okay \u2018what are our stories? What is our art?\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an older history than anywhere else in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first creation story which comes out of Australia is the story of the Djang\u2019kawu sisters and that was the beginning of the Yolngu people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was one of the handful of people who went to Yalangbaraand and saw the sacred place Balma with my own eyes \u2026 the first contact point for Indigenous people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adnam was particularly fascinated by the three stone canoes embedded on the beach in Yalangbaraand, where the three sisters landed from Sulawesi, and reflects this the Djang\u2019kawu series at the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a hundred thousand years these Djang\u2019kawu sisters have been celebrated by song and painting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt came from body art originally \u2026 and then it was transferred from the body on to the bark and then from the bark on to the art, and that\u2019s called Mintji.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other paintings in the exhibition, such as his Ned Kelly series, draw together reflections on history as well as fascinations he developed earlier in life around the coast, bush, music and poetry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had the biggest backyard in the world, and I developed an affinity with the bush.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started painting at 14, 15, and by 19 I was a published author, a book called<br \/>\nA childhood on Wonga.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65965\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65965\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65965 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/IMG_1536-480x380.jpg?_t=1646730974\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In his works, the artist draws from his love of the bush and ocean, with a coastal series incorporating his love of surfing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt brought back the whole history of the Wurundjeri, because there was nothing in school except Captain Cook, and I thought I\u2019m walking round the bush and there\u2019s all these stone arrangements and canoes trees, it is very rich in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was from this he was invited to Arnhem Land, and was taught to play the didgeridoo by Yothu Yindi band members.<\/p>\n<p>He quickly went on to become a well-renowned musician, touring with Shirley Strachan, Jimmy Barnes and Peter Cupples and in the 1990s won gold at the Tamworth music festival.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65964\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65964\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65964 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/2-480x380.jpg?_t=1646730790\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65964\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In his Ned Kelly series Adnam reflects on the fascination with the historical character he developed early in life growing up in the Warrandyte.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Peter Cupples and Lisa Edwards will be performing at the exhibition\u2019s opening on the Sunday, March 27 at 5pm, alongside the artist meet and greet where Adnam will tell more of the histories and stories behind each work.<\/p>\n<p>Limited tickets to the opening are available through Trybooking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chirs Adnam\u2019s \u2018Mintji\u2019 art exhibition will open at Surfcoast Gallery in Torquay later this month.
