{"id":65938,"date":"2022-03-11T04:15:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T17:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=65938"},"modified":"2022-03-08T19:56:52","modified_gmt":"2022-03-08T08:56:52","slug":"gary-doesnt-just-row-boats-gazza-christened-at-torquay-boat-reveal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/gary-doesnt-just-row-boats-gazza-christened-at-torquay-boat-reveal\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Gary doesn&#8217;t just row boats&#8221;: &#8216;Gazza&#8217; christened at Torquay boat reveal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BOAT christenings at Torquay Surf Life Saving Club can be an emotional yet happy day and Sunday was no different.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of members gathered in the club\u2019s rear courtyard to listen to speeches, take photos and christen the club\u2019s new $30,000 crew boat sponsored by Torquay Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/IMG_0878_13071.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"287\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of all ages were there for the reveal of the newest addition to the boat ranks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MC for the reveal, club captain Julian Sweeney, named the boat after member Gary \u201cGazza\u201d Pettigrove for his long and effective tenure as a life member and integral role within the club since he joined in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Pettigrove is the son of founding Torquay SLSC members John and Wilma Pettigrove and is also a recipient of the Wishart Medal, the top individual award that can be bestowed upon a Victorian life saver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge honour,\u201d Mr Pettigrove said post-reveal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family has four boats named after them, it\u2019s a big deal for a single member to get one but to have four within our family, is just a massive honour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My parents were the \u2018gold star\u2019 people of this club and I was just another member within Torquay, but I love this club and I\u2019m very lucky to be a part of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/IMG_0895_65307.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"285\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gary Pettigrove next to president Tiffany Quinlan and club captain Julian Sweeney.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gary rowed with and has been mentored by some of the Torquay SLSC\u2019s biggest legends including John \u2018Moose\u2019 Russell, John Heathcote and Ray Heathcote, brothers of the club\u2019s current Open men\u2019s sweep Neil \u2018Hec\u2019 Heathcote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGary doesn\u2019t just row boats,\u201d Torquay SLSC president Tiffany Quinlan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has contributed more than just about any of our other members to be brutally honest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He\u2019s mentored me, he is an amazing human being, he has contributed his life and soul to this club and the christening is richly deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 412px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/IMG_0873_69898.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"412\" height=\"275\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gary&#8217;s wife Jenny did the honours of &#8220;christening&#8221; the boat.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another club figure to learn under Mr Pettigrove was Mr Sweeney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI earned my Bronze medallion under Gary, so everything I\u2019ve done over the last 30 years or so has been as a result of Gary,\u201d Mr Sweeney said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thank Gary for what he has contributed to the club and my family. My daughter is rowing now, she wouldn\u2019t be doing that if it wasn\u2019t for Gary and, as the Wishart Medal says, it goes to the champion lifesaver, and he is a champion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new Torquay Hotel boat will be cruising the waves at the Vic State Champs in Warrnambool this weekend before hitting the Aussie Championships in Queensland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BOAT christenings at Torquay Surf Life Saving Club can be an emotional yet happy day and Sunday was no different.
