{"id":66116,"date":"2022-03-17T04:15:48","date_gmt":"2022-03-16T17:15:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=66116"},"modified":"2022-03-15T16:12:13","modified_gmt":"2022-03-15T05:12:13","slug":"more-than-a-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/more-than-a-game\/","title":{"rendered":"More than a game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HIGH school footballers from Ballarat and Geelong came together at City Oval for the second annual Respect Cup last week as part of International Women\u2019s Day celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>Held at the City Oval, the headline clash between Loreto College 5. 4 (34) and Sacred Heart College 5. 4 (34) was a draw, following an opener between St Patrick\u2019s College and St Joseph\u2019s College.<\/p>\n<p>St Pat\u2019s 2.12 (24) beat St Joey\u2019s 3.4 (22), and with the highest combined brother-sister school score, the Ballarat institutions will hold the Cup for the next 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>The comp was established by the schools in 2021 to encourage respectful relationships and champion girls and women in sport.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/RespectCup07_54349.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Pat\u2019s Alex Molan controls play across the back. Photo: ALISTAIR FINLAY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Loreto forward Charli Ross is in her final year of school and said the atmosphere at the ground felt energetic during both games last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone from all schools were cheering us on and yelling at us. We were all a bit nervous, but excited too, so it\u2019s been a good atmosphere,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a wide variety of girls playing, and lots from younger year levels who will be able to play in the Cup in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wore the same jumpers as the St Pat\u2019s boys, and to see them come out and support us has been really good to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/RespectCup17_41341.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Remy Callender from Loreto drops it on the right. Photo: CHIPPY RIVERA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Teammate, Loreto Year 12 Beth Hucker has been playing footy for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Although she was \u201ctreated the same as everyone else,\u201d Hucker spent her first five years in the sport playing in one of Mount Clear\u2019s boys\u2019 teams, because opportunities for girls were limited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Respect Cup means a lot, levelling the playing field between men and women, and providing equal opportunities for all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been great to see the boys sticking around today to watch and support us. Photo: CHIPPY RIVERA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>St Patrick\u2019s College captain James Clark came off the field having won a \u201cchallenging\u201d contest against St Joey\u2019s who \u201cbrought their A-game,\u201d but was prouder to contribute to the \u201cwonderful initiative\u201d between the four schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a part of this is something we look forward to. It\u2019s been a fantastic showcase of school football amongst an unbelievable atmosphere, but it\u2019s much more than a football game,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re here to celebrate International Women\u2019s Day, and champion women in sport.
