{"id":66681,"date":"2022-03-31T04:45:23","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T17:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=66681"},"modified":"2022-03-31T04:45:23","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T17:45:23","slug":"grubbers-hold-on-for-back-to-back-premierships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/grubbers-hold-on-for-back-to-back-premierships\/","title":{"rendered":"Grubbers hold on for back-to-back premierships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OCEAN Grove Cricket Club are again at the top of Barwon\u2019s local cricket mountain for a second year in a row following its narrow five-run win over East Belmont in a thriller at Herne Hill Reserve on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The clash to decide the Barwon Women Cricket Competition\u2019s (BWCC) premiers for 2021\/22 was everything a final could hope to provide with solid numbers being put up by both teams and an exciting finish right until the last ball.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Grove were on the front foot early putting up a solid 111-run total in the full 20 overs led by heavy-hitters Mandy Adams (50) and opener Tesarna Lapham (25).<\/p>\n<p>Kristen Long of East Belmont did her best to slow down the Grubbers\u2019 batting knocking over a pair of wickets in her four overs of work allowing just 19 runs in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Grove did its best to maximise the inning, switching sides with 111 on the board and the Lionesses ready to make an immediate impact.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, it was Ocean Grove that made an almost immediate impact running out East Belmont opener Kelly Williams with just nine runs on the board.<\/p>\n<p>Her partner in crime Chrissy Walker fell two runs later to make it 2\/11 to give the responsibility to the captain Rebecca Farey and fourth batter Mikaela Monahan.<\/p>\n<p>The two put the pressure on with 73 runs combined between them and started to make the Grubbers very nervous.<\/p>\n<p>Farey eventually fell at 34 and Monahan did the same at 39 with East Belmont\u2019s total sitting at 6\/96.<\/p>\n<p>The tail end of the Lioness\u2019s batting order did their best to make up the difference, however, fell just five runs short with a total of 7\/106 at the conclusion of the 20th over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 462px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/03\/Grubberswin_14589.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"308\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocean Grove&#8217;s five-run win at Herne Hill Reserve was everything a grand final could have hoped for.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An elated Ocean Grove captain in Jacqueline Johnston was \u201cabsolutely relieved\u201d to pull away with the win.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re on a buzz, it was just wonderful feeling,\u201d Johnston said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, last season we finished on top, and we could just bask in the win, but this time we had a very back and forth game, so to come out on top was just exhilarating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know what we\u2019re capable of, so we just needed to make sure we were nice and relaxed and to stick with what we do well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result, we managed to put up a good score and it was good enough to get over the line.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OCEAN Grove Cricket Club are again at the top of Barwon\u2019s local cricket mountain for a second year in a row following its narrow five-run win over East Belmont in a thriller at Herne Hill Reserve on Sunday.
