Torquay RSL has filled its new memorabilia display cabinets with numerous items related to Navy, Army and Air Force activities.
\nThe secure, clear cabinets were purchased with a grant from the Department of Veterans\u2019 Affairs.
\nTorquay RSL president Ian Gilbank said the RSL had been cataloguing artefacts for display and storage for future displays.
\n\u201cIt has been a major task for our volunteers to prepare the material for display.
\n\u201cThe DVA grant made it possible for us to put on display items that would otherwise been hidden from the view of members and visitors to the Torquay Bowls Club.\u201d
\nAs well as the display cabinets, Commemoration Garden, opened by Corangamite federal member Sarah Henderson late last year, was also funded by DVA.
\nMs Henderson inspected the cabinets while on a visit to the Torquay Bowls Club last week.
\ncentrepiece of our Commemoration Garden in Taylor Park which has become very popular with visitors wanting to sit in peace and quiet for a few moments,\u201d Mr Gilbank said.
\n\u201cThe number of school children that visit the garden is wonderful and if one of our members is there at the time we explain to the youngsters what it is all about.
\n\u201cAnd to make it easier for visitors to the garden, we are in the process of organising plaques for the artillery gun, propeller and ship\u2019s anchor, which are features of the quiet space.\u201d
\nHe also asked people not to throw out defence service memorabilia they found in their home but to check with the RSL whether it was worth keeping for public display.
