{"id":67028,"date":"2022-04-07T04:00:55","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T18:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=67028"},"modified":"2022-04-08T14:42:33","modified_gmt":"2022-04-08T04:42:33","slug":"jan-jucs-india-robinson-lines-up-for-first-bells-pro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/swell-magazine\/jan-jucs-india-robinson-lines-up-for-first-bells-pro\/","title":{"rendered":"Jan Juc&#8217;s India Robinson lines up for first Bells Pro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When newly minted Jan Juc surf pro India Robinson paddles out for her maiden heat at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in a few days\u2019 time, it\u2019ll be yet another first for the 21-year-old who only qualified for the Championship Tour (CT) last December.<\/p>\n<p>Already this year, in her opening CT event, she competed in the first ever women\u2019s pro event at the notoriously heavy Pipeline in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZhDVGQjrxZ4\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always seen us women as more than capable to surf these waves \u2026 we all made history together \u2026 it\u2019s something I won\u2019t forget,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n<p>The next list tick came when she cracked the top 10 CT ranking in early 2022 \u2013 she\u2019s now #8 \u2013 and from this weekend will have a chance to chalk a few more ones on the board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has never been a local girl to win Bells,\u201d Robinson said of the longest running event in competitive surfing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels pretty surreal, honestly, because I\u2019ve been going down to Bells since I was eight, board caddying for all the pros.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d put Bells and Winki in my favourite top two spots \u2026 it\u2019s where I\u2019ve grown up and where I live, feels like home being in the water there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67076 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-47.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-47.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-47-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\nBeing back on home turf has all the benefits one would expect, including reconnecting with family and friends after months on tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor them it\u2019s one of the coolest things that they will witness in my career, having my brothers and family down there, it\u2019s going to be pretty cool \u2026 to be on the beach as part of the community supporting me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the routine \u2026I\u2019m surfing Bells as much as I can, in the gym, seeing the physio, seeing all my friends, it\u2019s been a while, just having fun with it all,\u201d she said of her preparation for the Pro Bells.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a chance to get match fit, after copping several recent knocks to the head that rank as some of the worst injuries she\u2019s sustained, Robinson is still on the mend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year I suffered two concussions within two months apart, the first in Potsville (NSW), the second I got a board to my temple at Pipe during qualifying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acting on medical advice, she decided to pull the pin on Pipeline after her first heats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely wasn\u2019t how I wanted to start my career on the CT, having to withdraw was one of the hardest decisions I\u2019ve ever had to make.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67080 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-49.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-49.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-49-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cBut when you have a bunch of specialists telling you it\u2019s too risky to go out and potentially jeopardise the rest of my career, I had to listen to them. I was giving myself the opportunity to be fit and healthy for Sunset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It shows a level of maturity, and understanding of the need for self-preservation, that some at Robinson\u2019s age sometimes struggle with; and it paid off, placing fifth in the next CT event at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still not 100 per cent, it\u2019s tricky, with head injuries it\u2019s probably best to rest, but with the sport I\u2019m into that\u2019s not really an option. I wear a helmet most of the time to make sure I don\u2019t suffer another one, I\u2019m just taking care of myself and making sure I do all the right things. I\u2019ve got a really great team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aided by friends, family, local knowledge, and a good team that she often gives a shout out to, Robinson has another strength that helps explain why she\u2019s rising to the top; self-belief through putting in work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been putting in a lot of hours at Bells for most of my life, now I\u2019m just fine-tuning equipment and boards, having fun, staying fit and healthy and looking after my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always wanted to [compete at Bells] but it was almost like it would never come true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a dream in the background, but I was committed to training as hard as I could, qualifying, and with that comes with being in the Rip Curl Pro.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67082 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-51.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-51.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-51-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cOnce I qualified, I had this level of respect for myself that I was good enough, so went into this year thinking I can make the top five and get a world title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m definitely striving to get further up in the rankings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a journey that she makes sure to stop along the way of, to share with others, particularly her local community and young women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe message I hope to send to all the young girls is to keep going for what you believe in, chasing their dreams, don\u2019t lose yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson will join France\u2019s Johanne Defay and Hawaii\u2019s Luana Silva in the lineup for Heat 5 of the Opening Round.<\/p>\n<p>For more info visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldsurfleague.com\/events\/2022\/mct\/3891\/rip-curl-pro-bells-beach\">www.worldsurfleague.com\/events\/2022\/mct\/3891\/rip-curl-pro-bells-beach<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When newly minted Jan Juc surf pro India Robinson paddles out for her maiden heat at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in a few days\u2019 time, it\u2019ll be yet another first for the 21-year-old who only qualified for the Championship Tour (CT) last December.
