Together they were some of the region\u2019s first board makers and surfing world\u2019s pioneers.<\/p>\n<p>When he again makes the trek down to Bells in a few days\u2019 time to catch the 59th Rip Curl Pro, Bob will be one of few in attendance who\u2019ll have been to every comp since it all began, and almost certainly the only one to have a break near Bells \u2013 Boobs \u2013 named after him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurfing was just a very, very small sport then \u2026 you never heard anything about it. Surf Lifesaving was, but surfing wasn\u2019t. The only people surfing back in those days were in southern California, Hawaii, and we had it in Sydney and Melbourne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reason people were surfing in Australia was thanks to a group of Americans out for the 1956 Olympic games in Melbourne who came to the coast equipped with the design of a shorter board than that being used locally.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67109\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67109\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-53.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-53.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-53-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bells pioneers reunite in 1994: (From left) Dick Garrard (Senior), Ed Beacham, Bryan Poynton (crouching), Ray Wilson, Neil Inglis (crouching), Joe Sweeney, Bob Johnson, and Brian Loudon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t very good for surfing on the old 16-footers, and then the \u201956 games came along, the Americans came for a surfing competition at Torquay and they wanted Malibus which we then started to use, and that\u2019s how Malibus were introduced to Victoria, and for that matter Australia as they went up to Sydney as well,\u201d Bob said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou couldn\u2019t ride a 16-footer at Bells but on Malibus you could.
