{"id":67420,"date":"2022-04-15T04:15:44","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T18:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=67420"},"modified":"2022-04-12T15:47:37","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T05:47:37","slug":"torquay-boardriders-gather-for-bells-pro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/torquay-boardriders-gather-for-bells-pro\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay Boardriders gather for Bells Pro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE second annual Torquay Boardriders Club (TBC) luncheon was graced with local and international surf royalty at an Juc Surf Life Saving Club last Friday, with pros Owen Wright and Lakey Peterson sharing their insights into surfing and the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics last year, Wright spoke of his journey to the Games, recovering from a severe head injury and prioritising family in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwen was truly inspirational and it was an honour to have the opportunity to chat to such a quality human and athlete,\u201d TBC co-founder and MC for the luncheon Ross Slaven said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of her love for the Surf Coast and how it felt like a second home to her, America\u2019s Lakey Peterson \u2013 world number two on the Championship Tour (CT) \u2013 played to the crowd by suggesting any future offspring would join the TBC.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67434\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67434\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67434\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-55.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-55.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-55-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67434\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob Smith with some of his historical collection of boards.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Troy Brooks similarly paid homage to the club, speaking of coming up as grom with the TBC and his time as a CT surfer.<\/p>\n<p>Bells Beach pioneer Joe Sweeney spoke of the making of the bell and how it all began back in the day, including how he helped create the first real track to the beach that opened up the spot to all back in the 60s.<\/p>\n<p>A celebration of the Torquay Boardriders\u2019 history, the luncheon is also a club fundraiser where local businesses donate and bid on surf related memorabilia and auction items.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything about the day was premium and well and truly lived up to expectations \u2026 the annual luncheon is becoming a prized community event on the surfing calendar,\u201d club president Harry Mann said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE second annual Torquay Boardriders Club (TBC) luncheon was graced with local and international surf royalty at an Juc Surf Life Saving Club last Friday, with pros Owen Wright and Lakey Peterson sharing their insights into surfing and the industry.
