	{"id":67467,"date":"2022-04-19T04:15:58","date_gmt":"2022-04-18T18:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=67467"},"modified":"2022-04-12T16:40:35","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T06:40:35","slug":"frustration-at-ongoing-rubbish-dumps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/frustration-at-ongoing-rubbish-dumps\/","title":{"rendered":"Frustration at ongoing rubbish dumps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NORTH Torquay residents are becoming increasingly frustrated at their backroad street being treated as a garbage tip, with piles of hard rubbish and green waste continually appearing on the roadside.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of Blackgate Road reached a tipping point last week, when at least three different trash dumps happened in the space of about two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Furniture, fridges, household items and garden waste littered the roadside early last week, as residents noticed new trash piles appear consistently during the day.<\/p>\n<p>Local man David Dennis, who lives in the area, was among the residents to share their anger online.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s frustrating how filthy people are,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They won&#8217;t dump it on their own curbs, they&#8217;ll come and dump it on ours. It just shows no respect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dennis said that the quiet backroads had been a common dumping ground for several years for local litterbugs, but the concentrated incidence pointed to increasing regularity of the irritating behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This one was rather cheeky because it&#8217;s virtually outside my front gate and in full view of my neighbour. They normally like to go a bit further, towards Ghazeepore Road and the Anglesea Road,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They just pull up, chuck stuff off and keep going.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The real nuisance is that these are our shire rates that are paying for people to go along and pick it all up again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-67436 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Embedded-web-60.png?_t=1649745613\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Embedded-web-60.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Embedded-web-60-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Workers removed hard rubbish from Blackgate Road last week and returned on Monday to collect green waste.<\/p>\n<p>The council&#8217;s environment manager Chris Pike said the organisation shared the community frustration with the illegal dumps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of the items dumped, such as whitegoods, bikes, BBQs and other metal items are accepted free-of-charge at council transfer stations. Some metal recyclers will even pick them up from residential properties,&#8221; Mr Pike said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no excuse for dumping rubbish. It is not only unsightly, it poses unacceptable risks to people and our environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The costs to clean up dumped waste incurred by councils and other land managers is borne by everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dumpers caught in the act can receive on-the-spot fines of up to $9000 under environment legislation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NORTH Torquay residents are becoming increasingly frustrated at their backroad street being treated as a garbage tip, with piles of hard rubbish and green waste continually appearing on the roadside.
